A valve guide insert for lining and relining a valve guide bore in an internal combustion engine, where the internal combustion engine includes a valve with a valve stem, and the valve guide bore is configured to support the valve stem for reciprocal motion. The valve guide insert includes a thin-walled, cylindrically shaped, metallic tube made from reformable bearing material suitable for slidably supporting a valve stem in a combustion engine, wherein the tube has a temporary retainer section and a long section. The retainer section defined a first outer diameter, and the long section defines a second outer diameter that is less than the first outer diameter, whereby the tube is configured to be dropped into a valve guide bore having a bore diameter less than the first outer diameter but greater than the second outer diameter. The valve guide insert may have a wall thickness of 0.008 inches or less.

Thin-walled valve guide insert and method for installing same within a cylinder head construction

A broach tool is provided for use in repairing a camshaft support bearing for operably supporting a camshaft in an internal combustion engine. The engine includes a cylinder head with bearing support towers that operably support journals on the camshaft at multiple aligned bearing locations. A broaching tool is provided that is adapted to be linearly pulled through the aligned bearing locations to reform the bearing support structures. Methods of repair include enlarging at least one camshaft support bearing to an oversized condition, such as by using the broach, optionally repairing the oversized camshaft support bearing by filling voids and galled areas with a thermal setting polymer, as needed, and optionally positioning a bearing insert on the camshaft, and positioning the camshaft including the bearing insert in the camshaft support bearing with the camshaft being rotatably supported in the bearing insert and the bearing insert being secured to the oversized camshaft support bearing.

Broach tool and method of repair

A cam shaft bearing insert is provided for use in a cam shaft support bearing for operably supporting a cam shaft in an internal combustion engine. The engine includes a cylinder head with bearing support towers that operably support journals on the cam shaft at multiple aligned bearing locations. Each bearing support tower has an oil port for passing oil to the associated journal. The bearing insert further has a thin-walled cylindrical sleeve formed from thin flat stock into a cylindrical tubular shape that is adapted to fit into one of the bearing support structures and form a bearing surface suitable for supporting the cam shaft. The sleeve has an outer surface with an outwardly deformed area configured to non-rotatably engage the one bearing support structure and has an aperture therein so that, when the aperture is aligned with the oil port of the one bearing support structure, oil can pass from the oil port to the associated bearing location. The sleeve includes a longitudinal slit allowing the sleeve to flex outwardly to slip onto a journal of the cam shaft and then flex inwardly into one of the bearing support structures of the cylinder head. A broaching tool is provided that is adapted to be linearly pulled through the aligned bearing locations to reform the bearing support structures in preparation for receiving one of the bearing inserts. A method of repair includes enlarging at least one cam shaft support bearing to an oversized condition, such as by using the broach, repairing the oversized cam shaft support bearing by filling voids and galled areas with a thermal setting polymer, as needed, positioning a bearing insert on the cam shaft, and positioning the cam shaft including the bearing insert in the cam shaft support bearing with the cam shaft being rotatably supported in the bearing insert and the bearing insert being secured to the oversized cam shaft support bearing.

An automatic boring device is provided that comprises a tool housing having attached to it two opposing handles with switches mounted thereon for selective engagement of pneumatic controls that activate a clamping device, rotation of a chuck of a pneumatic drill, and downward movement of the drill. The pneumatic drill is removable and the depth of the downward boring stroke is adjustable.

A thin-walled valve guide insert for lining and relining a valve guide of an internal combustion engine includes opposing ends each having a tapered insertion section thereon. The tapered insertion section defines a reduced outer diameter to facilitate installing the insert into a valve guide bore have a nonchamfered opening, and further defines a reduced inner diameter so that the insert has a substantially continuous wall thickness throughout its length and thus maintains the structural integrity of the insert from end to end. In the preferred embodiment, the valve guide insert is made of a phosphor bronze material of about 0.018 inch thickness or less, and includes a lengthwise slit therein. The insert is sprung open longitudinally along the slit and must be radially compressed so that the insert defines a sufficiently small outer diameter so that it can be axially installed in a press-fit condition into the valve guide bore of the engine. Both ends of the insert are formed with the tapered insertion section so that the insert can be positioned without regard to which end is directed toward the valve guide. Also disclosed is a tool for inserting the insert into the guide valve, the tool including an outwardly tapered junction adapted to spread one of the tapered insertion sections of the insert into longitudinal alignment with the insert to reduce the tendency to crush same from end forces exerted on the insert while installing the insert into the valve guide. Still further a process is disclosed for forming the guide valve insert with ends having tapered insertion sections thereon.

A fishing line release which includes a pair of opposed pincer members each having a tail, a body, a neck and a jaw. The pincer members are interconnected at their tails for movement between a position in which the jaws are open and a position in which the jaws are closed. The necks are of a reduced transverse dimension and are juxtaposed to one another such that each jaw extends transversely across both necks. A portion of the jaw of each pincer member closely overlies the neck of the opposed pincer member for movement thereacross, such that a gap is defined therebetween. A guard flange projects rearwardly from each jaw, along the side of the neck of the opposed pincer member, to thereby obviate the risk of the fishing line becoming entangled within the gaps formed between the jaws and necks of the opposed pincer members.

Fishing line release

A retainer for retaining a resilient annular oil seal element, surrounding the valve stem, to the valve guide in an internal combustion engine. The retainer includes an anchor sleeve made from a polymeric material such as nylon, Teflon or the like, first retention means for retaining the sleeve to an outer surface of a valve guide, a tubular shell surrounding the seal element, second retention means for retaining the seal element within the tubular sheet and retention means for retaining the shell to the anchor sleeve. Preferably the first retention means comprises preselecting the diameter of an inner surface of the anchor sleeve for interference fit with the valve guide outer surface.

A slitted tubular valve guide is provided with a substantially spiral groove along its entire length. At each point of intersection between the spiral groove and the slit, the ends of the groove segments immediately adjacent the slit are offset by an amount sufficient to create a discontinuity in the groove. The spiral groove is, therefore, divided into a number of inclined, decoupled groove segments incapable of flowing lubricating oil along their linear extent to the combustion chamber. The tubular valve guide is rolled from flat stock having inclined parallel groove segments preformed in the surface.

Oil-sealing valve guide insert and method of manufacture

An adapter is provided for mounting fishing accessories, such as a downrigger, in the flush mounted rod holders normally provided in the gunnels or stern of a sport fishing boat. The device comprises an elongate, cylindrical sleeve which is inserted axially in the flush mounted rod holder. The elongate sleeve is provided with a distal end and a proximate end disposed within the rod holder. First and second elastomeric rings are disposed on the distal and proximate ends of the sleeve. Distal and proximate end plugs are provided which are slidably received in the distal and proximate ends of the elongate sleeve. An accessory mounting plate is disposed on a portion of the proximate end plug which extends above the flush mounted rod holder. A threaded fastener actuated by a hand knob connects the distal and proximate end plugs for axially adjusting the plugs and compressing the first and second elastomeric rings. Axial compression of the elastomeric rings causes the rings to radially swell and firmly engage the walls of the rod holder thus securely fixing the adapter in the rod holder.

A planar board is provided for providing a taut rigging line to spread multiple trolling lines over a wide surface area behind a sport fishing boat. The board is collapsible to provide for storage in gunnel shelves or below deck. First and second parallel, generally planar buoyant boards are provided which are interconnected with a collapsible and adjustable metal frame. First and second parallel channels are disposed on opposing sides of the first and second planar boards. The collapsible metal frame includes a beam which extends between the first and second boards, the ends of the beam including first and second bifurcated bracket structures for slidably engaging the parallel channels disposed on opposing sides of the planar boards. A thumb screw sets the relative positions of the bracket structures and the planar boards. The bracket structures are pivotally mounted to the ends of the beam and a leaf spring is disposed atop the beam. First and second latches are disposed on the ends of the leaf spring, the latches extending through the beam and engaging the pivotable bracket structures disposed on the ends of the beam. The latches thus engage the bracket structures to fix the relative orientation of the planar boards and the beam. The leaf spring need only be lifted to release the latches and render the bifurcated bracket structure pivotable for collapsing the device into a compact package for storage.

Collapsible planar board

A broach specifically adapted for use in the final sizing of valve guides having a pilot, broaching surface and shank fabricated from a single piece of tool stock. The radius of the broaching surface, measured along a line perpendicular to both the longitudinal axis of the broach and a tangent to the broaching surface, is between 0.375 and 1.0 inches.

A valve seal retaining boot has a tubular base with at least two contiguous segments of progressively narrowing diameters. The largest diameter segment is closest to the valve seal, the smallest diameter segment is the furthest from the valve seal. The largest diameter segment can accommodate with an acceptable retention stretch limit a cylinder head exposed shoulder having the largest positive deviation from a nominal diameter. The smallest segment is designed to accommodate with an acceptable retention stretch limit an exposed shoulder with the largest negative deviation from a nominal diameter. Segments of intermediate diameters can be provided to accommodate exposed shoulders with diameters intermediate the maximum positive and negative deviations from the nominal diameter.
