A collapsible, fiber, bulk container which is made-up of a plurality of sidewalls joined by connectors to form a tubular body. The body is closed off by top and bottom members telescopically engaging said body. The bottom may be reinforced by a strut member to insure that the bottom does not warp and collapse. A reinforcing strap is also secured around the body.

A drum assembly for the collection and disposal of hazardous waste includes an enclosure with an access hole for collecting the waste. After the waste has been collected, the drum is opened and an insert is positioned to cover the access hole. The drum is then closed to form a sealed container.

A fiber drum with an integral skid is made by providing a lower skirt on a drum body. The skirt has cutouts for engagement by mechanized drum handling apparatus. The drum may also include an upper skirt cooperating with the lower skirt to maintain several drums aligned vertically for stacking.

A barrel or drum, preferably of fibre, with metal chimes responsive to longitudinal compressive forces is provided. The compressive forces urge a diagonal flange of the chimes towards the horizontal thereby expanding the outer circumference of the flange of the chime. The outer circumference of the flange of the chime has a looped or tear-drop shaped high strength hollow beam construction so as to increase the stiffness or 'stretch resistance' of the flange.

A self locking cover/bottom for a fibre drum includes substantially perpendicular projections with inwardly tapered portions which, when in registry with notched portions in the fibre shell sidewall, engage the notched portions (which can bend inwardly) such that an airtight seal can be formed for the drum. An optional feature is the provision of a channel in the bottom to accommodate a tine of a fork lift truck.
