Disclosed herein is a class of mm and sub mm wavelength amplifiers and oscillators operating with miniature helical slow wave circuits manufactured using micro fabrication technology. The helices are supported by diamond dielectric support rods. Diamond is the best possible thermal conductor, and it can be bonded to the helix. The electron beam is transmitted, not through the center of the helix, but around the outside. In some configurations the RF power produced may be radiated directly from the slow wave circuit. The method of fabrication, which is applicable above 60 GHz, is compatible with mass production.

High frequency helical amplifier and oscillator

A device for providing electromagnetic oscillations in the sub-millimeter range comprising one or more electron beam generators for providing a first and a second electron beam and one or more magnetic field generators for focusing the first and second electron beams. The device may comprise an oscillator comprising a slow wave circuit having a structure of an electrically non-conducting material with metallized surfaces adjacent the first electron beam and an amplifier comprising a slow wave circuit having a structure of an electrically non-conducting material with metallized surfaces adjacent the second electron beam and electrically connected to said oscillator. The oscillator and amplifier may be formed on a single substrate utilizing a single deposition process. The oscillator and amplifier may be contained in a single vacuum envelope.

Apparatus and method for producing electromagnetic oscillations

The disclosure relates to a sub-millimeter backward wave oscillator. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a miniature backward wave oscillator having a biplanar interdigital circuit. In one embodiment the interdigital circuit includes diamond and is coated with an electro-conductive material.

Method and apparatus for bi-planar backward wave oscillator

An electron gun () includes an electron multiplier () has a receiving end () for receiving primary electrons and an output end () that emits secondary electrons responsive to primary electrons arriving at the receiving end. An electron emitter () is arranged at the receiving end of the electron multiplier for supplying primary electrons thereto. At least one of an electrical and a magnetic focusing component () is arranged at the open output end of the electron multiplier for focusing the secondary electrons to define an electron beam. In a suitable embodiment, the electron multiplier includes a generally conical substrate () and an electron mirror () including a high secondary electron yield film () disposed on an outer surface of the conical substrate.

The present invention is directed in one aspect to methods of making free-standing, internally-supported, three-dimensional objects having an outer surface comprising a plurality of intersecting facets wherein a sub-set of the intersecting facets have a diamond layer of substantially uniform thickness. The diamond layer may be formed by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) over the surface of a substrate that has been fabricated to form a mold defining the sub-set of intersecting facets. A backing layer may be formed over at least a portion of the exposed diamond layer to enhance the rigidity of the layer when the substrate is removed.

Free-standing diamond structures and methods

A slow wave circuit () of a traveling wave tube includes a three-dimensional conductive structure (). A dielectric film () coats selected portions of the three-dimensional conductive structure (). An outer housing () surrounds the three-dimensional conductive structure () . The outer housing () includes interior surfaces that connect with the dielectric film (). In a method for generating or amplifying microwave energy, a three-dimensional conductive structure is laser micromachined to define a selected generally periodic pattern thereon. The conductive structure is arranged inside a generally hollow barrel. An electron beam passes through the generally hollow three-dimensional structure and interacts with the conductive structure and the generally hollow barrel to generate or amplify the microwave energy.

Traveling wave tube

A method for constructing thermally and dimensionally stable traveling wave tube circuits having high dimensional stability, narrow tolerances, and very small size by providing a small hollow preform constructed of a desired material which is coated with a layer of photoresist material then exposed to a UV laser to form a desired pattern mask in the photoresist layer. The pattern masked preform is then etched to create a preform having a desired shape. After shaping, the photoresist coating is stripped from said shaped preform to form a traveling wave tube circuit. Optionally the travel wave tube circuit may be polished. Additionally, the present invention contemplates an apparatus for forming small three dimensional circuit structures from preforms comprising a chuck for supporting the preform on its axis, a motor for rotating the preform, a UV laser for directing a beam onto the preform, a means for shifting the laser along said preform, and a controller for controlling the motors rate of rotation, the rate of movement along the length of the preform caused by shifting means, and whether the laser is on or off to achieve a predetermined pattern mask on the preform. Additionally, the present invention contemplates novel three dimensional structures including a very small helical traveling wave tube circuit, a ringed bar circuit structure, a finned ladder circuit structure, and a slotted finned ladder circuit structure as well as traveling wave tubes incorporating these structures.
