Disclosed is a ketal having the formula: wherein R' and R&#x2033; independently are an alkyl group having from 8 to about 20 carbon atoms; m and n independently are an integer of from 1 to about 200; and r and s independently are an integer of from 1 to 3; and the method for preparing the ketal by transketalization using 1,1-dimethoxycyclohexane or 1,1-diethoxycyclohexane with an (alkoxyphenoxy)ethanol type of surfactant. The ketal is at least partially soluble in water.

1,1-di[(alkylphenoxy)ethoxy]cyclohexanes

An infrared sensitive, positive-working, image forming composition and element are disclosed. The image forming composition comprises a 1,1-di[(alkylphenoxy)ethoxy]cyclohexane, an infrared absorbing dye having a maximum absorption peak in the range of from about 700 nm to about 1100 nm, and a novolac polymer. The composition is applied and dried on a planar, hydrophilic substrate to form an image forming element, in particular, a planographic printing plate. Upon imagewise exposure to a near-infrared radiation source, the infrared dye absorbs light in the exposed areas and converts it to heat, which causes a disruption in the matrix of the image forming composition. Upon development with an aqueous alkaline developer, the exposed areas are removed while the nonexposed areas remain, thus forming a positive image.

The water-soluble photosensitive color layer employed in each type of proofing construction includes a photopolymerizable polymer having a weight-average molecular weight between 5,000 and 100,000; an alkaline soluble resin having a weight-average molecular weight between 1,000 and 200,000 and an acid number between 50 and 300; and a water-soluble photoinitiator.

Novel water-soluble triazine photoinitiators and bifunctional ionic photoinitiators having an anion containing a photo-labile halomethyl-1,3,5-triazine and a photoinitiator cation are described. The ionic compounds are good photointiators for initiating free radical and acid sensitive reactions. The ionic photoinitiators are easily synthesized and eliminate the need for a combination of photoinitiators in a photocurable, photopolymerizable, or photoacid sensitive composition. Additionally, the radiation-sensitive compounds are resistant to migration in photosensitive compositions. The ionic photoinitiators are particularly useful in compositions for use in printing, duplication, copying, and other imaging systems.

Ionic halomethyl-1,3,5-triazine photoinitiators

Radiation-sensitive organo-halogen compounds that have a photo-labile halomethyl-1,3,5-triazine moiety and a polymeric moiety within the same molecule. The compounds of this invention are comprised of a polymeric moiety having attached or incorporated within its structure at least one 1,3,5-triazine nucleus, said triazine nucleus having at least one halomethyl substituent attached to a carbon atom of the triazine nucleus. These compounds are capable of being stimulated by actinic radiation at wavelengths of from about 250 to about 900 nanometers to generate free radicals and/or acids. The compounds of this invention are useful as photoinitiators in free radical polymerization reactions, oxidation-reduction reactions, or reactions sensitive to acid, and they also exhibit the capability to crosslink upon exposure to light.

A light-sensitive article comprising (a) at least one layer of photopolymerizable material containing a polymerizable compound having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, and a chromophore-substituted halomethyl-1,3,5-triazine photopolymerization initiator; (b) at least one layer of thermoplastic resin in contact with the layer of photopolymerizable material, said chromophore-substituted 1,3,5-triazine photopolymerization initiator capable of resisting migration to said layer of thermoplastic resin. The invention eliminates the problem of discoloration of the background resulting from excessive migration of the photoinitiator from the layer of photopolymerizable material to the contiguous layer of resin.
