A rotating control device includes a housing comprising a bore extending through the housing, a rotating body positioned within the bore of the housing and rotatable with respect to the housing and a packer assembly positioned within the bore of the housing between the housing and the rotating body and configured to form a seal between the housing and the rotating body. The device further includes a transmitter configured to transmit a sensor signal through the packer assembly and a receiver configured to receive the sensor signal from the transmitter through the packer assembly.

Rotating control device with communications module

A latch assembly is described for use with a rotating control device. The rotating control device provides a rotating seal to permit pressure control in an annulus surrounding a rotating tubular member such as a drill string in an offshore drilling operation. The latch assembly is operable to engage and disengage a body of the rotating control device from a remote surface location by wireless communication. An on-board actuation system is carried by the latch assembly such that no energy lines (hydraulic or otherwise) are required to couple the latch assembly to the surface location. The latch assembly may include both an operating latch mechanism and a running latch mechanism to selectively couple the latch assembly to one or both of the body of the rotating control device and a tubular member such as a drill string or other conveyance for running and pulling operations.

A communication system for an offshore drilling system includes an acoustic transceiver located at a surface location and a rotating control device (RCD) located below sea level. The RCD including a RCD acoustic transceiver configured to transmit data related to the RCD through a packer assembly located inside of the RCD and to the acoustic transceiver located at the surface location. The acoustic transceiver and the RCD acoustic transceiver are configured to wirelessly and bilaterally communicate data between the surface location and the RCD.
