A method and system used for controlling energy recovery from a vehicle, wherein the vehicle comprises a generator for recovering energy from rotation of the axle during operation of the vehicle. The method comprises measuring the inclination of the vehicle, and preventing the generator from recovering energy if the inclination of the vehicle is greater than zero.

Energy recovery system

A generator system for connection to a vehicle axle. The generator system includes: an electrically-actuated clutch having an engaged position and a disengaged position; a generator and a processor. The generator includes: a rotor configured to be selectively connected, via the clutch, to the vehicle axle; and a stator. In the engaged position, the rotor is connected to the vehicle axle via the clutch such that torque from the vehicle axle is transmitted to the rotor. In the disengaged position, torque from the vehicle axle is not transmitted to the rotor. The processor is configured to control the clutch to actuate between the engaged and disengaged positions, and the processor is configured to monitor an electrical output of the generator, wherein the processor is configured to command the clutch to move to the disengaged position if the electrical output moves outside a predetermined range.

A system and method for operating a transport refrigeration system including: a trailer system including a vehicle connected to a transport container; an electric generation device operably connected to a wheel axle of the trailer system, the electric generation device configured to rotate at an operating frequency, and to generate electrical power from the rotational energy of the wheel axle for charging an energy storage device when the electric generation device is activated; an energy management system for providing power to the transportation refrigeration unit of the trailer system, the energy management system including an energy controller in communication with at least one of the electric generation device and the energy storage device, wherein the energy controller is configured to modify the operation of the electric generation device when the operating frequency of the electric generation device is equal to or less than an energy controller operating limit.

Transport refrigeration system energy management system and method

Battery protection in a transport refrigeration system

A vehicle for transporting goods, a tractor-trailer system for transporting goods, and a method of operating a power management system for powering a transport refrigeration unit. The vehicle for transporting goods includes: an axle; a transport refrigeration unit; and a power management system for supplying power to the transport refrigeration unit. The power management system includes: a generator configured to be selectively coupled to an axle of the vehicle, wherein the generator is configured to generate electricity when coupled to the axle; and a controller configured to monitor a speed of the vehicle and to selectively couple and decouple the generator from the axle. The controller is configured to determine that the vehicle is in a first state and decouple the generator from the axle when the vehicle is in the first state, wherein the speed of the vehicle is increasing in the first state.

Power management system for a transport refrigeration unit

A refrigeration apparatus for use in a battery electric vehicle having a traction battery for driving the electric vehicle and a refrigerated compartment that, in use, is cooled by the refrigeration apparatus, the refrigeration apparatus including: a power supply system for powering a refrigeration unit of the refrigeration apparatus, the power supply system comprising a controller; wherein the power supply system is configured to be connected to the traction battery and the controller is configured to monitor a charge level of the traction battery; wherein the power supply system is configured to draw power for the refrigeration unit from the traction battery; wherein the controller is configured with a pre-cooling mode to be used during a period of charging of the traction battery from a mains power source.

Refrigeration apparatus with precooling for battery electric vehicles

A system and method for detecting current overload and leakage in a transport refrigeration unit. The method comprises measuring, by a microcontroller of an active fault detection circuit, a line current for each of one or more phases supplying power to a GP load of a refrigerant vapor compression system of the transport refrigeration unit; measuring, by the microcontroller, a voltage received by the active fault detection circuit from a battery of the transport refrigeration unit and transmitted via a conductor of the active fault detection circuit to a microprocessor of the refrigerant vapor compression system; controlling, by the microcontroller, a switch along the conductor of the active fault detection circuit to control transmission of the voltage, via the conductor to the microprocessor, Controlling the switch comprises (i) closing the switch upon a determination that the voltage level is greater than or equal to an operational threshold voltage level, (ii) closing the switch upon a determination that the voltage level is less than the operational threshold voltage level, and (iii) opening the switch upon a determination that any of the one or more line currents exceeds a threshold. A transport refrigeration system, comprising a primary controller; a refrigerated container with a plurality of compartments; a hazard detection system, comprising: an auxiliary controller; and a plurality of sensors respectively distributed in a plurality of compartments of a refrigerated container of the transport refrigeration system, each of the plurality of sensors operationally connected to and controlled by the auxiliary controller.
