Keeping track of potential receive window positions in a communication system can prevent the receive window from moving from the proper potential positions, thereby reducing the probability of incorrect positions of the receive window. For example, a receive window can be updated by comparing the block number of a received block to a receive window; if the block number of the received block is outside the receive window, discarding the received block; if the block number of the received block is inside the receive window, retaining the received block; and determining an updated receive window that has a reduced size that excludes received blocks having block numbers that are not permitted according to the sequence of block numbers.

Receive window updates in communication systems

The invention relates to an apparatus and method of detecting a sequence of information symbols from a first signal subjected to inter-symbol interference. The method is performed as one or more signal processing paths are each being adapted to setting each symbol in the sequence to a value. When an uncertain decision has been taken in a given signal processing path, the signal processing path is divided into two. After setting a number of symbols, the sequence of information symbols is selected. The threshold used to determine whether a symbol is certain or not is adjusted in accordance with an estimate of the noise. The number of symbol errors when detecting a signal subjected to inter-symbol interference, e.g. in a mobile station, is reduced, and therefore the performance of the receiver is improved. Since unnecessary calculations are minimized, computational complexity is reduced which, in turn, reduces the power consumption.

Methods of receiving communications signals can include generating a received analog signal including energy corresponding to communications transmitted from a remote transmitter, and performing an analog-to-digital conversion of the received analog signal to provide a received digital signal. The received digital signal can be digitally filtered using a first digital filter having a first bandwidth to provide a first filtered digital signal, and the first filtered digital signal can be processed to provide an estimate of the communications transmitted from the remote transmitter. The received digital signal can be digitally filtered using a second digital filter having a second bandwidth to provide a second filtered digital signal wherein the second bandwidth is greater than the first bandwidth, and a signal characteristic of the second filtered digital signal can be measured. Method and apparatus for decoding a convolutionally encoded sequence of bits encoded by an encoder with given generator polynomial. The encoded sequence of bits is decoded by a decoder which comprises an inverted given generator polynomial. The decoder is particularly designed for encoders having a code rate 1, including encoders utilized in EDGE/EGPRS communications systems. The decoder is less complex than Viterbi decoders, and is faster and requires less memory than Viterbi decoders.
