A robotic surgical system includes a surgical instrument defining a first longitudinal axis and a robotic surgical assembly defining a second longitudinal axis. The robotic surgical assembly includes an instrument drive unit configured for selectively receiving and driving the surgical instrument. The robotic surgical assembly defines a side opening having an insertion axis that is angled with respect to the second longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument is selectively insertable through the side opening to enable relative movement between the first longitudinal axis and the second longitudinal axis for selectively side-loading the surgical instrument into or out of engagement with the instrument drive unit.

The distal housing is rotatable relative to the proximal housing via the drive assembly. An instrument drive unit for use in a robotic surgical system includes a carriage configured to be coupled to a robotic arm, a hub rotationally coupled to the carriage and configured to be non-rotatably coupled to an electromechanical surgical instrument, a plurality of motors, a plurality of motor gears, a plurality of drive shafts, and a plurality of drive gears. Each motor gear is operably coupled to a corresponding motor, and each drive gear is fixed to a corresponding drive shaft. The drive shafts are rotationally supported in the hub and configured for interfacing with a corresponding driven member of the electromechanical surgical instrument. Each motor gear is configured to rotate a corresponding drive gear in response to an activation of a respective motor to actuate a function of the electromechanical surgical instrument.

A robotic surgical system includes an electrosurgical energy source, an instrument drive unit, a sterile interface module coupled to the instrument drive unit, and a robotic surgical instrument selectively couplable to the sterile interface module. The robotic surgical instrument may be disposed in electrical communication with the electrosurgical energy source while the robotic surgical instrument is coupled to the sterile interface module. The robotic surgical instrument is configured to automatically electrically disconnect from the electrosurgical energy source when the robotic surgical instrument is uncoupled from the sterile interface module.

The sterile interface module includes a body member for coupling a surgical instrument to a robotic surgical assembly, a decoupling collar supported on the body member and movable relative to the body member from a first position to a second position, and a drive transfer assembly supported by the body member. The drive transfer assembly includes a drive coupler and a transfer shaft extending from the drive coupler. The drive coupler engages the robotic surgical assembly and the transfer shaft engages the surgical instrument. The drive coupler engages the robotic surgical assembly while the decoupling collar is in the first position to enable the robotic surgical assembly to robotically control the surgical instrument. The drive coupler is retracted within the body member while the decoupling collar is in the second position to prevent the drive coupler from engaging the robotic surgical assembly.

An instrument drive unit includes a housing defining a central longitudinal axis; an inertial measurement unit disposed within the housing and configured to determine a pose of the instrument drive unit; and a controller disposed within the housing, the controller configured to receive the pose of the instrument drive unit from the inertial measurement unit and to generate a corrected output signal which compensates for the pose of the instrument drive unit.

An instrument drive unit for use in a robotic surgical system includes a carriage configured to be coupled to a robotic arm, a plurality of drive shafts rotationally supported in the carriage, a plurality of electric motors, and a plurality of concentric, tubular shafts extending through the plurality of electric motors. Each electric motor includes a stator and a rotor disposed within the stator. Each drive shaft is configured for interfacing with a corresponding driven member of the electromechanical surgical instrument. A rotation of a rotor of an electric motor rotates a corresponding tubular shaft, which, in turn, rotates a corresponding drive shaft to actuate a function of the electromechanical surgical instrument.

An instrument drive unit includes a hub, a motor pack, and an annular member disposed between the hub and the motor pack. The hub and motor pack each have a surface feature. The motor pack is rotatably coupled to the hub. The annular member defines an upper annular channel, and a lower annular channel. The annular member has a stop formed in each of the upper and lower annular channels. Upon the motor pack achieving a threshold amount of rotation relative to the hub, the surface feature of the motor pack abuts the stop of the lower annular channel to rotate the annular member. Upon the annular member achieving a threshold amount of rotation relative to the hub, the stop of the upper annular channel abuts the surface feature of the hub stopping further rotation of the motor pack.

A method of automatically assigning foot pedals of a robotic surgical system to surgical instruments of a surgical robot of the robotic surgical system includes: receiving a signal that a first electrosurgical pedal is actuated; determining a number of electrosurgical instruments connected to the surgical robot in response to actuation of the first electrosurgical foot pedal; assigning the first electrosurgical foot pedal to a first electrosurgical instrument connected to the surgical robot after the first electrosurgical foot pedal is actuated; and delivering electrosurgical energy to the first electrosurgical instrument in response to actuation of the first electrosurgical foot pedal after assigning the first electrosurgical foot pedal to the first electrosurgical instrument.

A surgical cart for supporting a robotic arm includes a base, a plurality of casters coupled to the base, and first and second rods rotatably supported by the base. The first rod is operably coupled to a first caster and configured to rotate in a first direction to one of lock or unlock the first caster. The second rod is coupled to a second caster and operably coupled to the first rod such that rotation of the first rod in the first direction causes the second rod to rotate in a second direction to one of lock or unlock the second caster.

A method of calibrating a torque sensor for a motor with a controller includes determining a gain of the torque sensor, zeroing a torque reading of the torque sensor, accelerating the motor at a known rate, and determining an inertia of the motor in response to accelerating the motor. Zeroing the torque reading occurs when the motor is in an unloaded and unactivated condition and accelerating the motor occurs when the motor is in an unloaded condition.
