A light-emitting device includes: a semiconductor diode structure, a reflector, a wavelength-converting layer, and an intermediate spacer between the diode structure and the wavelength-converting layer. The diode structure emits diode output light at a vacuum wavelength λto propagate within the diode structure. The reflector is on the back diode structure and internally reflects diode internally incident output light. The wavelength-converting layer is positioned with its back surface facing and spaced-apart from a front surface of the diode structure, and absorbs diode output light at λand emits down-converted light at a vacuum wavelength λ>λ, which exits the wavelength-converting layer through its front surface. The intermediate spacer includes one or more transparent dielectric layers and has an effective refractive index less than that of the wavelength-converting layer, so that the wavelength-converting layer acts as an optical waveguide supporting one or more laterally propagating optical modes at λand λ.

There is provided an illumination device () comprising: a substrate (); an optically transmissive first layer () arranged on the substrate; a photon emitting layer (), arranged on the optically transmissive first layer and comprising a photon emitting material configured to receive energy from an energy source and to emit light having a predetermined wavelength; a periodic plasmonic antenna array, arranged on the substrate and embedded within the first layer, and comprising a plurality of individual antenna elements () arranged in an antenna array plane, the plasmonic antenna array being configured to support a first lattice resonance at the predetermined wavelength, arising from coupling of localized surface plasmon resonances in the individual antenna elements to photonic modes supported by the system comprising the plasmonic antenna array and the photon emitting layer, wherein the plasmonic antenna array is configured to comprise plasmon resonance modes such that light emitted from the plasmonic antenna array has an anisotropic angle distribution; and wherein the photon emitting layer is arranged at a distance from the antenna array plane corresponding to a location of maximum field enhancement for light out-coupling resulting from the plasmonic-photonic lattice resonances.

Embodiments of the invention include a semiconductor light emitting device for emitting a first light at a first wavelength and a wavelength conversion medium arranged to convert at least part of the first light into a second light at a second wavelength. The wavelength conversion medium is disposed between a periodic antenna array and the semiconductor light emitting device. The periodic antenna array includes a plurality of antennas. The periodic antenna array supports surface lattice resonances arising from diffractive coupling of localized surface plasmon resonances in at least one of the antennas.

The invention provides a lighting device having a photo-excited phosphor layer, with two monochromatic light beams () that counter propagate within the phosphor layer () thereby providing a destructive interference of the excitation light outside the phosphor layer (). The excitation light source has an output wavelength greater than a peak absorption wavelength of the phosphor. This enables more efficient conversion of light and reduced heating.

Phosphor based lighting devices and method of generating a light output

Proposed is an illumination device (), comprising a light source () such as an LED or a laser diode, a wavelength conversion medium () such as a phosphor, and a periodic antenna array () made of a highly polarisable material such as a metal. The light source emits primary wavelength light that at least partially is converted in secondary wavelength light by the wavelength conversion medium. The periodic antenna array is positioned in close proximity to the wavelength conversion medium and functions to enhance the efficiency of the absorption and/or emission processes in the wavelength conversion medium through the coupling of the incident primary wavelength light or the emitted secondary light to surface lattice resonances that arise from the diffractive coupling of localized surface plasmon polaritons in the individual antennas of the array. This is especially advantageous for forming low &#xe9;tendue illumination device suitable for use in projection systems, or for controlling the directionality, the polarization, and/or the color of the secondary wavelength light.

A THz frequency range antenna is provided which comprises: a semiconductor film () having a surface adapted to exhibit surface plasmons in the THz frequency range. The surface of the semiconductor film () is structured with an antenna structure () arranged to support localized surface plasmon resonances in the THz frequency range.

A device for analyzing a sample using radiation in the terahertz frequency range is provided. The device comprises a transmitter () comprising a THz signal generator () for generating an electromagnetic THz signal, the THz signal generator comprising a nonlinear transmission line (). The device further comprises a surface plasmon polariton generating unit () adapted to convert the THz signal into a surface plasmon polariton. The transmitter () and the surface plamon polariton generating unit () are either integrated on one common substrate or on two separate substrates.

The present disclosure relates to a gas sensor including a first layer and a second layer superimposed on each other along an interface between the two layers. The first layer includes an array of nanoparticles along the interface, the nanoparticles provided so as to allow, upon illumination with electromagnetic radiation, long range diffractive coupling of surface plasmon resonances resulting in a surface lattice resonance condition. The second layer includes a material that, when exposed to at least one predetermined gas, detectably affects the surface lattice resonance condition. The material of the second layer preferably has a porosity of at least 10%.

The invention relates to an assembly for detecting the presence of a target based on a detection of a resonance associated to surface polaritons, such as long-range surface exciton polaritons (LRSEP). The invention relates to an assembly to be used in connection with a bio-sensor. The assembly comprising a carrier substrate () and a sensor layer () positioned on the carrier substrate. The sensor layer is of a material having a complex permittivity with an imaginary part being greater than or similar to the real part.

A metal nanoantenna for use in a biosensing device is disclosed. The metal nanoantenna is arranged to exhibit at least two particle plasmon resonances or surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). The nanoantenna is for use in a sensor and allows detection at low concentration of biological components. In one aspect, the nanoantenna can have an asymmetric structural configuration and spectrally separated resonances. In one aspect, there is a location in its structure providing local electromagnetic field enhancement at all of the SPRs. The metal nanoantenna can be used for background free measuring of a quantity of a biological component.
