Apparatus and operational methods thereof, including a top drive, a rotation sensor, and a processing device. The top drive connects with an upper end of a drill string. The rotation sensor facilitates rotational distance measurements indicative of rotational distance achieved by the top drive. The processing device causes the top drive to impart rotational oscillations alternatingly in opposing directions to the upper end of the drill string while maintaining a downhole toolface orientation during a slide drilling operation, such that each rotational oscillation rotates the upper end of the drill string through a base rotational distance. The processing device also causes the top drive to change the downhole toolface orientation by an offset rotational distance by adding the offset rotational distance and an overshoot rotational distance to the base rotational distance of an instance of the rotational oscillations.

Embodiments may generally take the form of a degradable composite structure and a method for controlling the rate of degradation of a degradable composite structure. An example embodiment may take the form of a degradable polymer matrix composite (PMC) including a matrix having: a degradable polymer, a fiber reinforcement, and particulate fillers. The fiber loading is between approximately 10% to 70% by weight and the particulate loading is between approximately 5% to 60%.

Degradable composite structures

A technique employs the use of oscillations downhole to facilitate a desired functionality of a downhole tool. According to this technique, a tool is initially conveyed downhole and operated to perform a function that relates to a downhole application. The operational efficiency of the tool is improved by creating oscillating forces which vibrate the tool to achieve a desired result, e.g. freeing the tool from a stuck position.

System and method for providing oscillation downhole

Active stabilization is provided. In one possible implementation a drilling tool associated with a drill bit includes one or more rotation alteration devices configured to alter a rotational radius of a drill string. The drilling tool also includes at least one active stabilizer rotatively attached to the drilling tool, as well as a variable brake configured to control a rotation of the at least one active stabilizer relative to the drilling tool. In another possible implementation, a drilling tool includes an active stabilizer rotatably coupled to the drilling tool, as well as an actuation system configured to control a torque placed on the active stabilizer through contact with a wall of a borehole.

An apparatus that is usable with a well includes an inner ring, an outer ring and a tool assembly. The inner ring includes a seat to receive an untethered object; the outer ring is concentric with the inner ring; and the tool assembly, downhole in the well, engages the outer ring with the inner ring to press the outer ring into a wall of a tubing string to secure the outer ring to the tubing string.

A system for use in treating a wellbore may include a tubular string deployed in the wellbore; and at least one valve assembly connected to the tubular string, each valve assembly for establishing communication between the tubular string and a formation zone, the at least one valve assembly comprises a sleeve having at least one fluid port therein that expands in an axial direction when the valve assembly opens to form a flowpath between an interior of the tubular string and the formation zone.

Fracturing sleeves and methods of use thereof

A system for selectively actuating sliding valves includes a segmented sleeve exhibiting a rocking (or pivoting) function. The rocking allows the bottom end of the sleeve to open wider when the front of a dart is pressed against it, provided the length of the dart is shorter than a 'target length' determined by the sleeve geometry. When the dart is at least as long as the 'target length' of the sleeve, the back of the dart prevents the sleeve from rocking as the front of the dart is pressed against the bottom seat. The dart remains pressed against the sleeve, effectively isolating the wellbore section above the dart from the one below it. Multiple zones can thus be independently isolated by using a set of sleeves with similar diameters, but different &#x201c;target lengths.&#x201d;

Systems and methods for evaluating a cement installation are provided. In one example, the cement may be evaluated using a casing arrival measurement sensor that measures casing arrival signals resulting from firing a signal from a cement bond logging acoustic source. External signals (e.g., signals other than the casing arrival signals) may be attenuated by firing an attenuation firing signal.

A method for extending reach of a coiled tubing string in a deviated wellbore includes determining a frequency of vibration of the tubing string based on a function of the bending resonance of the tubing string and vibrating the tubing string at the determined frequency while the tubing string is inside the wellbore. Embodiments may also include a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium to execute the foregoing method and a system for extending reach of a coiled tubing string in a deviated wellbore.

Techniques for axial vibration control of wireline tools and cables during logging operations. In undesirable cases the axial vibrations may lead to or exasperate the stick-slip problems of the logging tool. Control systems and strategies to minimize vibrations and techniques for identifying and inhibiting the sticking of the cable. A system includes a surface actuator and a sensor. The actuator generates an axial wave on the wireline cable which travels down the cable. If there is sticking of the cable, a reflection can also occur at the location of sticking. This shift in the transmission of the wave on the wireline cable is used to identify the onset and/or presence of sticking.

Apparatus and a method for delivering a rod in a cylinder including propagating a rod in a cylinder along the interior of the cylinder, and introducing a motion in an orientation orthogonal to a length of the rod, wherein the motion comprises multiple motion sources along the length of the rod, and wherein the multiple motion sources comprise a control system that controls at least one of the motion sources. An apparatus and method for delivering a rod in a cylinder including a cylinder comprising a deviated portion, a rod comprising a length within the cylinder, multiple motion sources positioned along the length of the rod, and a control system in communication with at least one of the motion sources, wherein the control system controls the location of frictional contact between the rod and cylinder over time.

Method and apparatus of distributed systems for extending reach in oilfield applications

A method of estimating extended reach for a downhole line traversing a deviated section of a well. The method may include storing line and well architectural and physical data and then performing a static analysis of substantially axial-exclusive estimated friction between the line and well wall during conveyance (which may be thought of as the contact force due to interference therebetween). A one dimensional dynamic analysis may then be performed. Thus, based on these factors, speed of the conveyance, vibration parameters of an incorporated vibration tool, etc., an efficient simulation of the conveyance may be run.

Technique for establishing predictive reach through a deviated well

A mechanism for selectively activating a plurality of downhole pathways. The method includes a casing segment which includes a plurality of casing ribs, a valve which includes a sleeve coupled for movement between an open and normally closed position, a rocker member mounted to the sleeve, a dart for pumping in hole including a dart profile matched to the rocker member profile such that the dart profile couples to the rocker member profile when in close proximity and, in turn, the sleeve moves using hydraulic force from the closed position to the open position.

Apparatus and methods for activating a plurality of downhole devices

Harvesting energy from non-stationary, multi-frequency mechanical vibrations using a tunable electrical circuit. In an embodiment, an apparatus for converting vibrational energy to electrical energy includes a vibrational energy harvester having a transducer for generating time-varying electrical signals in response to environmental vibration; at least one power storage device; a switching network operably coupled between the transducer of the vibrational energy harvester and the at least one power storage device, wherein the switching network includes a plurality of switching elements each defining a switchable current path that is controlled by a control signal supplied to the respective switching element; and electronics configured to generate the control signals for supply to the switching elements of the switching network, the electronics including first circuitry, second circuitry, third circuitry, and fourth circuitry.

Non-stationary multi-frequency vibration energy harvesting with tunable electrical impedance

A technique that is usable with a well includes communicating an untethered object in a passageway downhole in the well and using a cross-sectional dimension of the object and an axial dimension of the object to select a seat assembly of a plurality of seat assemblies to catch the object to form an obstruction in the well.
