Disclosed herein is a middle- or large-sized battery module comprising a plurality of stacked unit cells, each unit module including two or more plate-shaped battery cells electrically connected with each other, each battery cell having electrode terminals formed at opposite sides thereof. The battery module is manufactured by connecting electrode terminals of a pair of unit modules by welding, mounting a sensing unit, including a sensing member, to the welding part and bending the welding part such that the unit modules are stacked, and repeatedly performing the above processes until all the unit cells are stacked.

Disclosed herein is a middle- or large-sized battery pack including a plurality of unit cells electrically connected with each other, wherein the battery pack is constructed in a structure in which a heat transfer medium flows through gaps defined between the unit cells for controlling the overall temperature of the battery pack to be within a predetermined temperature range for the optimum operation of the battery pack, and each unit cell is provided at the outer surface thereof, at which the heat transfer medium is brought into contact with each unit cell, with a layer containing a phase transformation material ('phase transformation layer') for minimizing individual temperature difference between the unit cells. The present invention has the effect of controlling the overall temperature of the battery pack and individual controlling the temperatures of unit cells constituting the battery pack. Also, the present invention has the effect of restraining the abrupt change in temperature of the unit cells, when the battery pack is not in operation or when the external environment abruptly changes, thereby preventing the degradation of the unit cells. Furthermore, the present invention has the effect of minimizing damage to the unit cells due to foreign matter when the foreign matter is brought into contact with the unit cells. In addition, the present invention has the effect of reducing the overall temperature difference of the battery pack and manufacturing a middle- or large-sized battery pack having a compact structure.

Disclosed herein is a heat exchange system for battery packs, which controls the temperature of a medium- or large-sized battery pack including a plurality of unit cells such that the battery pack can be operated under the optimum operating conditions. The heat exchange system includes an air inlet port and an air outlet port formed at one side of a housing surrounding the outer surface of the battery pack so as to form a predetermined flow channel, through which air flows, a driving fan mounted in the flow channel for driving the air to flow through the flow channel, and a Peltier element mounted at the air inlet port for controlling the temperature of air introduced into the air inlet port. In the heat exchange system according to the present invention, the thermoelectric element is mounted inside the air inlet port, through which air for cooling the battery pack is introduced into the heat exchange system. Consequently, the present invention has the effect of easily controlling the optimum operating temperature of the battery pack, reducing influences caused by external conditions, and decreasing noise and vibration.

Disclosed herein is a three-dimensional electrode terminal of a battery having an electrode assembly mounted in a pouch-shaped case, wherein a part of the electrode terminal, which is exposed from the battery case, has a predetermined thickness, and has a perpendicular surface (a perpendicular end surface) formed on the end thereof. According to the present invention, it is possible to easily accomplish the connection between the electrode terminal and the electrically connecting member without modifying the shape of the electrode terminal, and it is possible to easily accomplish the connection for detecting the voltage, the current, and the temperature of the battery. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of the three-dimensional electrode terminal according to the present invention is higher than that of the conventional plate-shaped electrode terminal. Consequently, the stability of the three-dimensional electrode terminal is high in the state that the electrode terminal is electrically connected with the electrically connecting member, and the electrical connection is easily accomplished even in a small space, especially when batteries are stacked one on another with high density so as to manufacture a medium- or large-sized battery module.

Disclosed herein is a cooling system for vehicle battery packs, which is constructed such that an intake duct for introducing a coolant, such as air, which cools a battery pack, into the battery pack from a predetermined region is not included, air existing inside a vehicle at a region around a battery pack isolated from a cabin of the vehicle is directly introduced into the battery pack, and the air having passed through the battery pack, which has been heated, is discharged through an exhaust duct connected to an internal space of the vehicle, in which a possibility of air to be recirculated to the region around the battery pack is low. The battery pack cooling system according to the present invention uses air existing inside the vehicle. Consequently, the control of temperature and humidity is easier than when external air is used, and generation of noise and backward flow of flames and toxic gas generated during a fire, which are problems caused when the air in the cabin is used, are prevented. In the heat exchange system according to the present invention, the heat exchange medium, for example, air is not introduced from the outside of the battery system, but is circulated in the battery system by the heat exchange unit. Disclosed herein is a cooling system for a battery pack that is usable as a power source of electric vehicles and hybrid-electric vehicles. The cooling system has the effect of effectively dissipating heat generated from battery cells by supplying a refrigerant to the battery cells at a constant flow rate, and of minimizing a temperature difference between the battery cells during a cooling process. This prevents degradation in the performance of the battery cells, and achieves optimal temperature control.
