Lightguide integrity monitoring in a head mounted display is facilitated by monitoring an elongated conductor disposed proximal a lightguide in an optical combiner. When a sufficient change in one or more electrical characteristics of the elongated conductor is detected, a signal indicating that the lightguide has been damaged may be generated, which may alert the user to the damage or disable one or more light sources in the HMD to prevent eye discomfort. The monitored electrical characteristics of the elongated conductor may include connectivity, impedance, and gain, among others. A sufficient change in the one or more electrical characteristics may be detected based on a percentage change in an electrical characteristic, a change in more than one electrical characteristic, or a change in a ratio of two electrical characteristics, among others.

Lightguide integrity monitoring in a head mounted display

An optical device includes a light guide (LG) attached to a support component. The LG receives a display light from a light engine, and directs a first portion of the display light out of the LG to form an outcoupled light. The LG also causes a second portion of the display light to become incident upon an outer perimeter of the LG at one or more LG regions of the LG to form one or more stray lights, respectively. The LG may be mechanically coupled to the support component at one or more coupling regions positioned outside of the one or more LG regions. A wearable heads-up display (WHUD) can incorporate the optical device.

Direction of light propagation in wearable optical devices

A charger case for storing and charging two electronic devices includes a docking tray having two storage compartments to hold the two electronic devices. The charger case includes two device connectors, with each device connector exposed to a respective one of the two storage compartments to establish electrical communication with a respective one of the two electronic devices. A portable charger is included in the case and electrically coupled to the two device connectors.

A combiner lens includes a first lens, a lightguide, and a second lens. The first lens includes a first lens body and a flange integrally formed with the first lens body. The first lens body and flange define a main cavity. The flange has a first joint surface. The lightguide is disposed at least partially in the main cavity. The second lens includes a second lens body positioned in stack with the lightguide and the first lens body. The second lens has a second joint surface in opposing relation to the first joint surface. The second lens is attached to the first lens by a joint formed between the first joint surface and the second joint surface.

A magnetic connector system includes a connector receptacle having a connector pin in coaxial arrangement with a magnetic ground return and a connector insert having a power contact in coaxial arrangement with a magnetic sleeve. A power and/or data connection is formed between the power contact and the connector pin when an end face of the magnetic ground return is magnetically latched to an end face of the magnetic sleeve.

A wearable electronic device includes a body defining an aperture therethrough, sized and shaped to receive a digit of a user. The wearable electronic device may include a processor housed in the body and an input device at least partially extending from an outer surface of the body to receive input from another digit of the user. The input device has an actuating surface that is movable between a first position and a second position. Movement of the actuating surface between the first position and second position provides an input to the processor. The wearable electronic device includes a transmitter coupled to the processor and configured to send electronic transmissions to an external electronic device, the electronic transmissions corresponding to the inputs received from the user, and a power source for providing power to the processor, the input device, and the transmitter.

Wearable electronic devices having a multi-use single switch and methods of use thereof

A magnetic connector includes a connector insert having a magnetic sleeve and a power contact received in a central opening of the magnetic sleeve. The magnetic sleeve has an end face to magnetically latch onto a magnetic ground return of a connector receptacle. The power contact has a spring contact end to contact a connector pin of the connector receptacle when the end face of the magnetic sleeve is magnetically latched onto the magnetic ground return of the connector receptacle.

Systems, devices, and methods for engineering the eyebox of a display using multiple heterogeneous exit pupils are described. The eyebox of a display includes at least two heterogeneous exit pupils that are different from one another in terms of size and/or shape. Heterogeneous exit pupils may overlap, one may encompass another, or they may be completely spatially-separated from one another. Such configurations enable specific eyebox and/or visual display configurations that can be advantageous in certain applications. An example in which a scanning laser-based wearable heads-up virtual retina display implements a holographic combiner that is engineered to provide multiple heterogeneous exit pupils is described.

Systems, devices, and methods for eyeboxes with heterogeneous exit pupils

Systems, devices, and methods for spatial multiplexing in holographic optical elements ('HOEs') are described. A spatially-multiplexed HOE includes multiple spatially-separated holographic regions and each spatially-separated region applies a respective optical function to light that is incident thereon. An exemplary application as a spatially-multiplexed holographic combiner ('SMHC') in a scanning laser-based wearable heads-up display (&#x201c;WHUD&#x201d;) is described. In this exemplary application, a scanning laser projector directs multiple light signals over the area of the SMHC and the SMHC converges the light signals towards multiple spatially-separated exit pupils at or proximate the eye of the user. The particular exit pupil at the eye of the user towards which any particular light signal is converged by the SMHC depends on the particular region of the SMHC upon which the light signal is incident. Such may be useful in engineering particular eyebox and/or user interface display configurations in the operation of the WHUD.

Systems, devices, and methods for spatially-multiplexed holographic optical elements

Systems, devices, and methods for combined angle- and wavelength multiplexing in holographic optical elements ('HOE') are described. An angle- and wavelength-multiplexed HOE includes multiple angle-multiplexed sets of wavelength-multiplexed holograms. Each set of wavelength-multiplexed holograms includes at least two holograms that are each responsive to a different wavelength of light. Each angle-multiplexed set of wavelength-multiplexed holograms includes a respective set of wavelength-multiplexed holograms that are all responsive to light that is incident thereon with and angle of incidence that is within a particular range. An example application is described in which an angle- and wavelength-multiplexed HOE is used as a holographic combiner in a wearable heads-up display, where angle-multiplexing provides multiple spatially-separated exit pupils in the eyebox of the display and wavelength-multiplexing provides multiple colors to each respective exit pupil.
