An electronic device may have a display such as an organic light-emitting diode display. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display may have an array of organic light-emitting diode pixels that each have OLED layers interposed between a cathode and an anode. A first passivation layer, a first planarization layer, and a second passivation layer may be formed over the cathode. The first and second passivation layers may be formed from inorganic material. A second planarization layer may be formed over the second passivation layer between the second passivation layer and a polarizer. The second planarization layer may planarize the polarizer at the edges of the active area of the display where the polarizer would otherwise have a steep taper. Planarizing the polarizer in this way mitigates undesirable secondary reflections off of the polarizer. The first and second planarization layers may be formed from organic material.

Organic light-emitting diode displays with planarization layers

An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels on a substrate. The display pixels may be organic light-emitting diode display pixels or display pixels in a liquid crystal display. In an organic light-emitting diode display, hybrid thin-film transistor structures may be formed that include semiconducting oxide thin-film transistors, silicon thin-film transistors, and capacitor structures. The capacitor structures may overlap the semiconducting oxide thin-film transistors. Organic light-emitting diode display pixels may have combinations of oxide and silicon transistors. In a liquid crystal display, display driver circuitry may include silicon thin-film transistor circuitry and display pixels may be based on oxide thin-film transistors. A single layer or two different layers of gate metal may be used in forming silicon transistor gates and oxide transistor gates. A silicon transistor may have a gate that overlaps a floating gate structure.

Displays with silicon and semiconducting oxide thin-film transistors

A light emitter that operates through a display may cause display artifacts, even when the light emitter operates using non-visible wavelengths. To mitigate artifacts caused by a light emitter operating through a display, the display may have a higher density of thin-film transistor sub-pixels than emissive sub-pixels. This allows for a region in the display to include emissive sub-pixels but be free of thin-film transistor sub-pixels. The light emitter may operate through this region in the display. Additionally, to reduce the amount of space occupied in the inactive area of a display by gate driver circuitry, at least a portion of the gate driver circuitry may be positioned in the active area of the display. To accommodate the gate driver circuitry, emissive sub-pixels may be laterally shifted relative to corresponding thin-film transistor sub-pixels.

Display with a transmitter under an active area

An electronic device display may have an active area with pixels. An optical sensor may be formed under a sensor region in the active area. During operation, ambient light and/or other light associated with the optical sensor may pass through the sensor region. To ensure that the light for the optical sensor can pass through the display, the display may have one or more layers with sensor openings such as a metal layer and a pressure sensitive adhesive layer that attaches the metal layer to the pixels of the display. To help minimize visibility of the openings in the sensor region, the pressure sensitive adhesive layer may be configured to have a reflectivity that matches the appearance of the display in the sensor region to surrounding areas. Undesired light output uniformity can be reduced by ensuring that the substrate material in the display has a low light absorption coefficient.

Electronic devices with through-display sensors

A display may have organic light-emitting diode pixels formed from thin-film circuitry. The thin-film circuitry may be formed in thin-film transistor (TFT) layers and the organic light-emitting diodes may include anodes and cathodes and an organic emissive layer formed over the TFT layers between the anodes and cathodes. The organic emissive layer may be formed via chemical evaporation techniques. The display may include moisture blocking structures such as organic emissive layer disconnecting structures that introduce one or more gaps in the organic emissive layer during evaporation so that any potential moisture permeating path from the display panel edge to the active area of the display is completely terminated.

An electronic device may have a display with an active area configured to display images and an inactive area that is free of pixels and that does not display images. Touch sensor sense lines may have portions located in the active area and portions located in the inactive area. The active and inactive areas may be characterized by respective reflectivity values. To match the reflectivities of the active and inactive areas and thereby avoid undesired visually distinguishable differences in the appearances of these areas, the touch sensor circuitry in the inactive areas may be configured to match the reflectivity values of the active and inactive areas. Sense line portions in the inactive area may have metal traces of enhanced reflectivity and/or uneven surface topology to enhance ambient light reflections through a circular polarizer that overlaps the active and inactive areas.

Electronic device displays with visibly matched borders

An organic light-emitting diode display may have rounded corners. A negative power supply path may be used to distribute a negative voltage to a cathode layer, while a positive power supply path may be used to distribute a positive power supply voltage to each pixel in the display. The positive power supply path may have a cutout that is occupied by the negative power supply path to decrease resistance of the negative power supply path in a rounded corner of the display. To mitigate reflections caused by the positive power supply path being formed over tightly spaced data lines, the positive power supply path may be omitted in a rounded corner of the display, a shielding layer may be formed over the positive power supply path in the rounded corner, or non-linear gate lines may be formed over the positive power supply path.

Power and data routing structures for organic light-emitting diode displays

A display may have rows and columns of pixels that form an active area for displaying images. A display driver integrated circuit may provide multiplexed data signals to demultiplexer circuitry in the display. The demultiplexer circuitry may demultiplex the data signals and provide the demultiplexed data signals to the pixels on data lines. Gate lines may control the loading of the data signals into the pixels. The display may have a length dimension and a width dimension that is shorter than the length dimension. The data lines may extend parallel to the width dimension and the gate lines may extend parallel to the length dimension such that there are more data lines than gate lines in the display. A notch that is free of pixels may extend into the active area. Data lines extending parallel to the width dimension of the display may be routed around the notch.

Electronic devices with narrow display borders

An electronic device may be provided with an organic light-emitting diode display. The display may include row driver circuitry that provides an emission control signal at an output terminal to display pixels. The emission control signals may enable or disable light emission by the pixels. The row driver circuitry may include a bootstrapping capacitor that stores charge for boosting a gate signal at an intermediate node for a pull-up transistor above a power supply voltage. The row driver circuitry may include a pull-down transistor coupled to the intermediate node. The source terminal of the pull-down transistor may be coupled to the output terminal or an additional pull-down transistor may be stacked with the pull-down transistor to reduce leakage current. Charge pump circuitry may be coupled to the intermediate node to ensure that the intermediate node is maintained at a voltage above the power supply voltage.

Organic light emitting diode displays with improved driver circuitry

A display may have an array of pixels. Each pixel may have a light-emitting diode such as an organic light-emitting diode. The organic light-emitting diodes may each have an anode that is coupled to a thin-film transistor pixel circuit for controlling the anode. Transparent windows may be formed in the display. The windows may be formed by replacing subpixels in some of the pixels with transparent windows. When subpixels are replaced by transparent windows, adjacent subpixels may be overdriven to compensate for lost light from the replaced subpixels. Adjacent subpixels may also be enlarged to help compensate for lost light. An array of electrical components such as an array of light sensors may be aligned with the transparent windows and may be used to measure light passing through the transparent windows.
