In one example, the present disclosure describes a device, computer-readable medium, and method for providing estimated bandwidth ranges to network-attached entities such as applications, user endpoint devices, and customer premises equipment. For instance, in one example, a method performed by a processing system including at least one processor includes collecting performance data for a communications network from a plurality of sensors distributed throughout the communications network, calculating based on the performance data, an estimated lower limit of an available bandwidth in the communications network and an estimated upper limit of the available bandwidth in the communications network, receiving a query from a network attached entity for the available bandwidth in the communications network, and providing, in response to the query, the estimated lower limit and the estimated upper limit to the network attached entity.

An architecture related to notifying user equipment of communication transportation functionality and/or facility shifts between a wired communication transportation framework and a wireless communication transportation framework. A method can comprise determining a decrease in a number of data packets flowing through a wireline network interface over a defined period of time, based on the number of data packets, determining that the wireline network interface is failing, generating a notification comprising a data record comprising a field representing a state associated with the failing wireline network interface, and sending the notification to a user equipment.

A method and apparatus for providing security to an endpoint device are disclosed. For example, the method receives a signaling message by the endpoint device. A secure network is disclosed. The secure network includes a residential gateway to communicate with a remote network and a local network. At least one trusted local device is configured to send communications including data packets with authentication information to the residential gateway to request access to resources of the remote network. The residential gateway inhibits a request received from the local network to access resources on the remote network until the residential gateway uses authentication information to authenticate data packets associated with the request as originating from the at least one trusted local device.

System and method for securing a network

A method is disclosed for proximity-based call management that includes sensing a proximity event between a first device associated with a first network and a second device associated with a second network, sending a first communication address for the first device from the first device to the second device over a wireless communication path between the first device and the second device, and signaling the second network from the second device to establish a conference call between the first device and the second device. A proximity based call management apparatus is disclosed including a processor coupled to a memory, a proximity sensor in data communication with the processor, a network interface in data communication with the processor, and a computer program stored in the memory for execution by the processor, the computer program comprising instructions proximity-based call management.

A server to host a multi-player game is disclosed. The server includes a network interface coupled to an Internet Protocol (IP) network to send and receive data related to a multi-player game. The server includes a game play data module to receive multi-player game play data from a plurality of end user gaming devices via the network interface. The multi-player game play data is received via a plurality of unicast transmissions. The server includes an assembly module to assemble the multi-player game play data received from the plurality of end user gaming devices to generate aggregated game update data. The server also includes a transmission module to transmit the aggregated game update data as a single IP multicast transmission via the network interface.

A management system manages multiple multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs), the VPNs having overlapping IP addresses. The system includes a storage storing a file that associates a host name with an IP address and a route distinguisher. The host name corresponds to a network element within one of the customer VPNs. The system also includes a label obtaining system that obtains at least one label for the host name based upon the associated IP address and route distinguisher. The system also has a packet construction system that creates packets destined for the network element using the obtained label(s).

Scalable management system for MPLS based service providers

A network management system includes a processor and a memory that is accessible by the processor. A computer program is embedded within the memory. The computer program includes instructions to detect the receipt of one or more modified management messages. Each of the one or more modified management messages includes one or more modified data packets having a unique identifier. The computer program further includes instructions to determine an originating device associated with each of the unique identifiers. In a particular embodiment, the unique identifier is a predetermined device management password. Further, the predetermined device management password is a community string for a simple network management protocol data packet.
