The present invention provides a display device with reduced power consumption and that reduces changes in luminance, and perceptibility of flicker, and a driving method thereof. A display device according to an exemplary embodiment comprises: a display panel configured to display a still image and a motion picture; a signal controller configured to control signals for driving the display panel; and a graphics processing unit configured to transmit input image data to the signal controller, wherein the signal controller comprises a frame memory configured to store the input image data, and the display panel is driven at a first frequency when the motion picture is displayed and the display panel is driven at a second frequency that is lower than the first frequency when the still image is displayed.

Display device and driving method thereof

A method of driving a display panel includes generating compensated grayscale data by increasing grayscale data corresponding to an N-th gate line of a plurality of gate lines of the display panel, where N is a natural number, generating a data voltage based on the compensated grayscale data, outputting the data voltage to the display panel including a plurality of pixel electrodes and a plurality of data lines, where each of the plurality of data lines is alternately connected to the plurality of pixel electrodes in a first pixel column and the plurality of pixel electrodes in a second pixel column, generating a storage voltage having a first level and a second level, where the second level is lower than the first level, and applying the storage voltage to the display panel.

Method of driving display panel and display apparatus for performing the same

A display device and a driving method thereof are disclosed. In one aspect, the display device includes a display panel including a plurality of pixels, a data driver transferring data voltages to a plurality of data lines, and a gate driver transferring gate signals to a plurality of gate lines. The display device also includes a signal controller controlling the data driver and the gate driver and including a signal processor. The signal processor includes a memory and a coupling index calculator calculating a coupling index which represents a coupling degree between adjacent rows. The signal processor compensates for the input image signal to generate a compensated image signal based at least in part on the coupling index.

A display device includes pixels respectively arranged in areas defined by gate lines and data lines, a gate driver that drives the gate lines in response to a gate pulse signal, a data driver that drives the data lines in response to a clock signal and a data signal, and a timing controller that applies the clock signal and the data signal to the data driver and the gate pulse signal to the gate driver in response to an image signal and a control signal. The timing controller periodically changes a pulse width of each of the gate pulse signal and the clock signal.

Display device

A display device includes a display panel for displaying a still image and for displaying a motion picture. The display panel includes a gate line, a data line, a storage electrode line, a first switching element connected to the gate line and the date line, a storage connected to the switching element and the storage electrode line. The display device further includes a signal controller for providing controlling signals to drive the display panel. The display panel is driven at a first frequency when the motion picture is displayed. The display panel is driven at a second frequency lower than the first frequency when the still image is displayed. When the display panel is driven at the second frequency, a common voltage inputted to the storage electrode line changes.

Display device and method for driving the display device

A display device includes a display panel having gate lines and data lines, a signal controller driving the display panel, a graphic processing unit transmitting input image data to the signal controller, a gate driver driving the gate lines, and a data driver driving the data lines. The display panel is driven at a first frequency when displaying a moving image and driven at a lower frequency when displaying a still image. The signal controller includes a frame memory storing the input image data, a calculator calculating a representative value of image data stored in the frame memory, a line memory storing the representative value, and a kick-back corrector generating auxiliary image data by correcting the representative value according to a kick-back voltage. The data driver applies an auxiliary voltage corresponding to the auxiliary image data to the data lines in a vertical blank period when displaying the still image.

A display device includes a display panel that includes a first pixel and a second pixel, the first pixel being associated with a positive pixel voltage relative to a data voltage and being associated with a first leakage current, the second pixel being associated with a negative pixel voltage relative to the data voltage and being associated with a second leakage current. The display device further includes a gate driver for providing a first gate-off voltage having a first value to at least one of the first pixel and the second pixel, the first value being in a range determined based on an equality-enabling value, wherein a value of the first leakage current is equal to a value of the second leakage current if the first gate-off voltage having the equality-enabling value is provided to the at least one of the first pixel and the second pixel.

Display device and related method

The present invention relates to a display device capable of reducing power consumption and preventing flicker, as well as a driving method thereof. An exemplary display device includes: a display panel configured for display of a still image and a motion picture; a signal controller programmed to transmit control signals for driving the display panel; and a graphic processing unit transmitting input image data to the signal controller. The signal controller includes a frame memory storing the input image data, and the display panel is driven at a first frequency when the motion picture is displayed and alternatingly driven at the first frequency and a second frequency when the still image is displayed, the second frequency being lower than the first frequency.

A display apparatus includes a display panel, a timing controller, data and gate driving parts. The display panel includes first and second substrates, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates, and displays an image. The timing controller includes a data compensating unit that outputs compensated grayscale data in an n-th pixel row, based upon a coupling capacitance generated according to a grayscale data variation between an (n&#x2212;1)-th pixel row and the n-th pixel row, n' being a natural number. The data driving part converts the compensated grayscale data to an analog data voltage, and outputs the analog data voltage to data lines.

In order to reduce power consumption of a display device when a still picture is to be displayed, a display area of the device is subdivided into a plurality of Still Picture Refresh Groups (SPRGoP's), with each SPRGoP consisting of n pixels. All n of the pixels are charged in every one of sequential frames when a motion picture mode is in effect. Less than all of the n pixels of each SPRGoP are refreshed in each frame of an N-frame refresh cycle when a still picture mode is in effect. Different schemes for cycling through the n pixels of each SPRGoP are disclosed.
