A set of carpal tunnel syndrome relief devices is provided for treatment of a subject. The set includes several devices configured to be applied to a wrist which may have various shapes and sizes. Each device may be configured for an adhesive application to a skin area on a proximal side of a wrist over a median nerve of the subject. One device may be selected to match the profile of the skin of the subject and provide a distance from the peak of the middle portion to the underlying skin of about 3 to 6 mm&#x2014;so as to achieve optimal pull of the skin above the median nerve and relief of carpal tunnel syndrome. An alternative, subject-specific design of the carpal tunnel syndrome relief device profile is also described.

Carpal tunnel syndrome relief devices and methods of using thereof

A novel pillow is provided to easily adjust its height by pulling a lever on the side of the pillow to activate the air control valve configured to personalize the head support needed for that individual. Pulling the lever to a fully open position creates a larger air passage to the inflatable bladder and activates an air pump for rapid inflation of the pillow so as to increase its height. With a user head laying over the pillow, pulling a lever slightly opens up a smaller opening suitable for gradual deflation of the pillow and reducing its height caused by the pressure generated by the head. Soft comfort portion on top of the pillow enclosed in a stretchable fabric reduces surface tension and creates a softer feeling for the user thereby improving comfort and consequently sleep quality. An altimeter may be incorporated with the bladder to easily monitor sleep patterns of the user.

Inflatable pillow with adjustable height

A novel pillow is provided to easily adjust its height by pulling one or both levers of a unique double-lever air valve. Pulling a first lever opens up a smaller opening suitable for gradual deflation of the pillow and reducing its height under a pressure of a user head laying over the pillow. Pulling both levers together activates an electrically driven air pump to rapidly inflate the pillow through a larger opening so as to increase its height.

A capacitive tactile sensor for measuring location and force of touch from an external object includes a drive electrode layer separated from a sense electrode layer by a dielectric substrate, which may be a two-sided FPCB. A first deformable conductive shield layer is further provided and is separated from either the drive electrode layer or the sense electrode layer by a first compressible dielectric layer. A control electronics are operatively connected to all of the drive electrode layer, sense electrode layer, and the first conductive shield layer. The control electronics may be configured to measure a change in capacitance upon the external object imparting local mechanical compression onto the first conductive shield layer and the first compressible dielectric layer. The tactile sensor improves reliability of interconnections between drive and sense electrodes and the control electronics.

Capacitive tactile sensor with nested matrix electrodes

A force sensing touch screen input device is a solid assembly of multiple layers including a display with a touch-sensitive external surface, a first and second electrode layers separated by a compressible dielectric structure&#x2014;forming a capacitive force-sensing array, and a rigid planar substrate. One or both electrode layers may be formed by metallizing a polymer surface of the rigid substrate or by creating a conductive electrode onto an internal surface of the display. To increase reliability, each layer is permanently adhered to or formed onto an adjacent layer over its entire surface, whereby preventing internal shifts therebetween. To increase response time, the cover glass flexibility, compressible dielectric structure and the gasket structure between the cover glass and the rigid planar substrates are selected to provide elastic compression and recovery during normal operating conditions.

Force-sensing touch screen input device

A physiological sensor-transmitter assembly for measuring a physiological property at an internal body location of a subject over time is described. An instrument for inserting the assembly in the subject and a method of monitoring a physiological property measured at the internal body location over time are also described. The assembly includes a sensor and a transmitter adapted to transmit information from the sensor in a non-wired fashion to a receiver. The assembly also includes an anchor adapted to attach to an externally accessible portion of a subject and a tether that connects the sensor and the anchor to maintain a position of the sensor within the gastrointestinal tract of the subject.

Micro-remote gastrointestinal physiological measurement device

A pressure sensor and pressure-sensing catheter in which a deformable pressure sensing membrane is separated from an inner metalized surface on a rigid support by an air gap. An input allows a voltage to be applied to an electrode on the sensing membrane and an output allows reading of the signal modulation from the support surface. An outer sleeve overlays the membrane and a wire bus transmits the signals to a terminal connector. The catheter may include a vented air gap, a multiplexing wire bus, and an internal cable to maintain tension.

High resolution solid state pressure sensor

A novel capacitive proximity tactile sensor is formed by an electrode layer and a compressible non-conductive layer. Positioning a conductive object in contact with the sensor and applying contact force onto the sensor surface allows for both detecting the location of touch (as in traditional proximity sensors) as well as measuring contact force (as in tactile array sensors) due to a capacitance-measuring sensor formed between the electrode layer and the object with the compressible non-conductive layer therebetween. Useful applications of the sensor include input device for consumer electronic item, flexible and thin weight scale, shoe insole for monitoring pressure distribution of a foot while walking, pressure-monitoring seat cushion and others.

Capacitive proximity tactile sensor

A removable holder for a smart phone is provided to support the smart phone in front of a driver on a steering wheel. Close proximity of the smart phone allows easy access and good visibility of its display which helps in using the GPS navigation or other features of a smart phone while the vehicle is in motion. Retention of the smart phone assures its steady position when the steering wheel is turned but at the same time allows for its deflection out of the way in case of an airbag deployment. The attachment element of the holder includes two raised bars and an elastic band to form a 3-point contact area with the steering wheel. The smart phone retainer is length-adjustable to accommodate a variety of smart phones. The holder can be easily mounted and removed from the steering wheel without using hand tools.

An electronic device housing with a seemless user input zone that measures the level of force applied by the user is described. It is particularly advantageous when used with small hand-held consumer electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, game&#x2014;and media players. A housing for an electronic device includes a seamless user input zone defining a contact force-sensitive deformable area. A capacitance sensor is formed between the conductive inside surface of the housing and the electrode of the rigid base facing that inside surface. Linear support elements such as columns support the housing away from the rigid base defining an air gap. Capacitance measurement circuit is deployed to detect the location and progressively increasing levels of force applied by the user onto the housing and send a user input signal to the electronic device.

A tactile device includes a touch input surface in any number of forms including a force sensitive touch screen. In this embodiment a cover captures a transparent screen located on capacitive sensors. Touching the screen produces signals from each sensor that can be combined to identify the location of the touch and the force exerted by that touch.

A capacitive tile tactile sensor is described and includes several groups of individual sensors each controlled by a dedicated IC. Individual sensors are formed by sensing electrodes on one side of the sensor and a single ground electrode on the other side, the ground electrode is separated from the sensing electrodes by a compressible dielectric layer. A single electrical connection between the ground electrode and the sensing electrode layer allows for routing of all electrical connections including individual electrodes and a ground electrode to appropriate ICs within the same layer using conductive ink or other similar techniques. Stand-alone configurations are described as well as those adapted for communicating with outside control means including a personal computer. Arranging groups of sensors in parallel with each other creates a matrix of sensors while arranging them along a single line creates a linear strip sensor. Using off-the-shelf capacitance-sensing ICs to control a limited number of capacitance sensors allows reducing the number of electrical connections to the sensor array and increasing its reliability.

Capacitive tactile tile sensor

A reconfigurable tactile input device includes a first rigid electrode layer, a compressible dielectric structure, and a second flexible electrode layer forming together a tactile sensor with appropriate electrode connection means to a control means. The control means may include a mixed-signal IC mounted next to the input device in a compact package and capable of measuring capacitance in real time. The dielectric structure may include a matrix of compressible geometric elements with voids therebetween optionally vented to atmosphere, making the entire assembly thin and facilitating its use for mobile phones and other small, portable electronic devices. Some embodiments provide the user wit tactile feedback upon compression of the electrodes. An optional flexible display may be mounted over the input device to indicate the present configuration to the user.

A system for visually indicating, in real time or post hoc, values of a physical property detected over a period of time along a dimension of an organism to a user on a temporal plot and a profile plot, either individually or concurrently. The detected values may be visually indicated on the temporal plot using any of a variety of techniques, including, but not limited to, a contour technique, a line trace technique or a mesh plot technique. Further, the detected values may be visually indicated on the profile plot using any of a variety of techniques, including, but not limited to a contour technique, a line trace technique or a histogram technique. To provide a finer spatial resolution, values may be interpolated for locations between the locations at which values were detected, and these values may be displayed on the temporal plot and the profile plot.
