Example embodiments are directed to a method for detection and avoidance (DAA) of an ultra wide band (UWB) signal and a UWB terminal. The method includes: shifting a data signal by a desired frequency in a first direction; filtering the shifted data signal through a notch filter; and shifting the filtered data signal by the desired frequency in a second direction, the second direction being opposite to the first direction. The UWB terminal comprises an encoder for encoding data signals; a tone nulling unit for changing at least one tone of the plurality of tones into a null tone; an inverted fast Fourier transformer; a low pass filter for filtering the inverted fast Fourier transformed data signals; a filter circuit for attenuating an intensity of the low pass filtered signal; and a radio frequency (RF) circuit for transmitting the filtered signal.

A transmitting apparatus and method in a transmit diversity system, which transmits a plurality of block-coded symbols over a plurality of antennas are provided. The transmitting apparatus includes N+M antennas where N is an integer equal to or greater than two and M is an integer equal to or greater than one; a switch which forwards N-ary block-coded symbols to N-ary antennas of the N+M antennas; and a switch controller which controls switching of the switch, and when a receiving end which receives the N-ary block-coded symbols informs the switch controller of a poor reception state, the switch controller forwards the N-ary block-coded symbols to other N-ary antennas which include at least one antenna different from the N-ary antennas. A signal acquisition apparatus and method for reducing a false alarm rate are disclosed. The apparatus includes a comparator for detecting a first peak by comparing a correlation value of a received signal with a first threshold and detecting second peaks in a sample interval of the detected first peak based on a second threshold which is different from the first threshold. Thus, a signal is acquired based on a number of the detected second peaks. Accordingly, the false alarm rate due to the noise can be reduced while the detection probability is maintained even at a high SNR.

The apparatus applicable to the OFDM receiver, includes a channel impulse response (CIR) estimator for estimating a CIR of a present symbol from which a symbol timing is to be detected, using a previous symbol received prior to the present symbol; a matched filter for computing the CIR using the present symbol; a correlation calculator for calculating correlation between the estimated CIR and the CIR computed at the matched filter; and a peak detector for detecting the symbol timing by obtaining a timing offset between the estimated CIR and the computed CIR based on a maximum value of the calculated correlation.
