A method is provided that includes receiving, at a media device and from a client device, a request for a temporary identifier for a group chat session, and provisioning, by the media device, the temporary identifier based on a device identifier of the media device. The media device provides the temporary identifier to the client device. The media device receives from a server an invitation to join the group chat session, where the invitation is directed to the temporary identifier, and the media device joins the group chat session.

Techniques are disclosed for automated detection and notification of interconnect errors or failure. An interconnect is tested via passive or active means. Error data associated with data transferred via the interconnect is measured and analyzed to generate error statistics. Error statistics are then used to determine an error rate of the interconnect and an alert is generated if the error rate exceeds a threshold. Alerts are displayed to users for troubleshooting and/or for indication that the interconnect should be replaced.

Monitoring interconnect failures over time

A content streaming device includes display mode shift logic that selects a display mode among multiple display modes of the content streaming device. The content streaming device also includes region detection logic that determines a region of the content streaming device. The content streaming device further includes one or more processors that communicatively couples to an electronic display. The one or more processors instruct the display mode shift logic to select a first display mode having a first refresh rate based on the region of the content streaming device and supported display modes of the electronic display.

Dynamic display mode selection

Techniques are disclosed to select display settings for a display device. Device capabilities may be read from a display device and a determination made whether the device capabilities support other display formats than are read from the display, for example, a high dynamic range (HDR) format or a high resolution format. When the device capabilities do not include an format supported by a video source, video may be driven from the video source to the display device in the format and, if confirmation is received that the display device displays the driven video, settings may be stored for the display device identifying the format as a one supported by the display device. Additionally, interconnect may be tested by estimating noise levels generated by the interconnect to a network connection and/or by estimating network throughput both when video is driven over the interconnect and when it is not. Display formats may be selected for the device based on a maximum data rate of a network connection that can be maintained while the interconnect carries video.
