A method for separating target molecules or particles from a fibrinogen containing sample comprises: (a) trapping the said target molecules or particles in a fibrin network by converting at least partially the fibrinogen contained in the sample into fibrin; (b) retracting the said fibrin network to form a fibrin clot; (c) separating the said fibrin clot from the surrounding sample medium.

Described is a method for the detection and quantification of methicillin-resistantfrom a specimen comprising a) contacting the specimen with Anti-Protein A antibodies so as to adsorb methicillinresistantand/or methicillin-sensitive, b) separating said antibodies to which methicillin-resistantand/or methicillin-sensitivehave been adsorbed from the specimen, c) lysing methicillin-resistantand/or methicillin-sensitiveadsorbed to said antibodies so as to release their DNA, d) combining the released DNA with (i) probes and/or primers which are specific for a target DNA sequence of the mecA gene of methicillin -resistantand/or of methicillin-resistantepidermis, (ii) probes and/or primers which are specific for a target DNA sequence of methicillin-resistantother than a target DNA sequence of the mecA gene and (iii) probes and/or primers which are specific for a target DNA sequence of methicillin-resistantepidermis other than a target DNA sequence of the mecA gene, whereby the target DNA sequences of methicillin-resistantand of methicillin-resistantepidermis are not homologous, e) subjecting the combined released DNA and the specific probes and/or primers to conditions which permit amplification of said target DNA sequences, f) detecting the presence and amount of the amplified target DNA sequences as an indication of the presence and amount of methicillin-resistant, new primers and probes and diagnostic kits for the detection and quantification of MRSA.

The present invention comprises a non-cognate hybridization system (NCHS). The NCHS generally includes a hybridization technology that is simply and economically used to probe for non-cognate nucleic acid sequences, i.e., for nucleic acid strands without known target sequences. NCHS causes nucleic acids, bound to a probe surface, to create a hybridization pattern that provides information about the presence and/or quantity of the nucleic acid sequences in a sample. The NCHS results normally orient the examiner towards a small number of specific diagnoses across a wide variety of diagnostic categories (including but not limited to infections, neoplasms and autoimmune diseases). The test will also identify final-common-pathway syndromes such as sepsis, anaphylaxis and tumor necrosis. While the test utilizes genetic information, it does not depend on prior knowledge of the genes involved in a particular disease or syndrome.
