The invention relates to the field of combustible objects used in weaponry and in particular to the field of combustible cartridge cases. The combustible objects according to the invention are covered with a thin layer of varnish, based on an organic binder, containing hollow microbeads, the said varnish being based on a binder chosen from the group comprising chlorinated rubbers, polyvinylidene chloride, cellulosic binders, glycero-phthalic binders, polyurethane resins and polyepoxy resins. The varnish contains between 5 and 20% by weight, preferably about 10%, of hollow microspheres, relative to the dissolved polymer, and optionally between 2 and 15% by weight of an energy-producing charge having a self-ignition point above 200.degree. C. The combustible objects according to the invention exhibit delayed self-ignition if they are placed in contact with a hot wall, without their thermodynamic properties being adversely affected.

Novel poly-(carbonate-urethane)-triols which are liquid at room temperature, have a molecular weight of less than 5000, and are of the formula: ##STR1## wherein A is an alkylene or cycloalkylene group, R is an alkylene group having up to 4 carbon atoms, Z is an alkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, n is a number representing the degree of polymerization, and m is 0 or 1. These poly-(carbonate-urethane)-triols are prepared by a transesterification reaction between an alkyl or aryl carbonate, at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol, and a primary or secondary dialkanolamine, the dialkanolamine being present in such an amount that there is statistically one molecule of the dialkanolamine per polymer chain. The poly-(carbonate-urethane)-triols are useful for the production of aminoplast resins which can be used, for example, as stoving lacquers.

Aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polycarbonate-triols having a molecular weight of not more than 3,000, which contain hydrophobic segments and are liquid at room temperature are obtained by transesterifying an aryl carbonate with a primary aliphatic triol and a mixture of two diols, HOAOH and HOBOH, at least one of the radicals A or B being a hydrophobic radical, the proportion of the primary aliphatic triol is such that there is statistically one molecule of the said triol per polymer chain in the product, and the ratio of the diols being such that the polycarbonate-triol obtained is equivalent to a mixture of a% by weight of a polycarbonate derived from the triol and the diol HOAOH alone, and of b% by weight of a polycarbonate derived from the triol and the diol HOBOH alone, the percentages a and b corresponding to the following two conditions:

A new particulate nitrocellulose composition comprises nitrocellulose and 10 - 30% by weight of a hydroxylic plasticizer containing at least one free hydroxyl group. A protective water-soluble colloid is used to prepare the compositions. The compositions are particularly valuable for the manufacture of polyurethane lacquers, and improve the resistance of the lacquers to solvents and to migration of plasticizers.

Particulate nitrocellulose composition

A process for the production of plasticised nitrocellulose in the form designated 'semi-chips', comprises impregnating nitrocellulose flock while the latter is present in a stirred suspension in water, separating the plasticised nitrocellulose obtained from the suspension, and drying at a temperature not exceeding 60.degree. C. The novel nitrocellulose 'semi-chips' and the novel apparatus to carry out the invention are also described.
