A disc of a magnetic disc cartridge is braked while the cartridge is outside of a receptacle of a magnetic disc memory unit by a radially extending leaf spring mounted on a wall of the cartridge so it has a free end engaging an aperture in a drive platter. The drive platter has an aperture that is engaged by a drive post of a drive disc connected to the memory drive shaft while the cartridge is inserted in the receptacle. The leaf spring is positioned so that the free end thereof is lifted out of the aperture by a post fixedly mounted on the memory unit to release the brake member while the cartridge is in place in the receptacle.

Binary bits on a magnetic storage medium are read by a magnetic head that moves at approximately constant speed relative to the medium. The medium includes several elongated adjacent magnetic tracks, each including a succession of longitudinally positioned polarized magnetic flux variations arranged in elemental areas of equal length along the length of each track. Adjacent areas are susceptible to having like and unlike magnetic flux polarizations. The head and tracks are positioned so the head straddles a pair of the tracks and is simultaneously responsive to flux variations in the straddled tracks. The head and track move relative to each other so the head is responsive to successive flux variations as time progresses. The areas are arranged so there is always a magnetic flux polarization transition at predetermined equi-spaced positions along the track length at a boundary between a pair of elemental areas. The transition direction at each boundary indicates a binary bit value. The fluxes of the elemental areas between adjacent boundaries selectively have different polarity variations to assure that like polarity transitions at each boundary represent like binary bit values.

Magnetic storage medium

A read/write head moves relative to magnetic discs having track addresses corded thereon in Gray code in a plurality of reference zones. The head is moved by an electric motor and reads information as the head is shifted from a starting track to a destination track. The address of the destination track is expressed in weighted, i.e., standard, binary code, and is stored in a register. The address of the head is read by a read element of the head from the recording tracks. In response to the initial and destination tracks, an intermediate track C, approximately halfway between the initial and destination tracks, is calculated. The head is accelerated from the initial track to the intermediate track by feeding a motor for driving the head with a constant current. In response to the head detecting the address of the intermediate track, the current supplied to the motor is reversed so that the head is decelerated. The calculations and comparisons are performed in the weighted, binary code. The reverse polarity current is applied to the motor until the speed of the head, as determined exclusively in response to addresses read by the head, is lower than a minimum threshold. In response to the speed of the head being detected as less than the minimum threshold, the flow of current to the motor is cut off, at which time the address of the track is compared with the destination track. In response to these two addresses differing, the sequence of steps is repeated.

Apparatus and method for shifting a head movable relative to a carrier

A magnetic recording disc includes a plurality of sectors, each of which includes a plurality of data tracks and a reference zone containing information for identifying the data tracks. Some of the sectors are standby sectors containing information which would normally be contained in the sectors containing the data tracks. The reference zones of all sectors contain binary fault indicating bits which indicate whether a particular sector contains faults, and parity bits having values dependent on the location of the parity bit and the value of the fault bit at the same location as the parity bit. A data processor commands a read out head for the disc to be located at a particular position. From the command position of the data processor and the value of the fault bit, the data processor computes an expected parity bit value. The expected parity bit value is compared with the parity bit value read from the disc to provide an indication as to whether the fault bit is accurate.

Method of writing information relating to faults in a magnetic recording

Binary coded address information is written by a magnetic head on a magnetic recording medium, such as a disc, as a plurality of tracks, each having an address associated with it. Each track includes a reference zone containing a plurality of individual cells equal to the number of bits in the address. Each cell represents a binary value and includes two binary state transitions, each of which can occur at one of only two positions. One transition of each cell in each zone occurs at the same position within the cell, with adjacent zones having alternating positions of this transition. The other transition in the cells in each zone occurs at either position to represent the binary values.

Method of writing addresses on a magnetic recording medium

Items of information written in a binary code on a plurality of magnetic c tracks are read by a magnetic head. The address for each track is written in a reference zone having a plurality of cells equal to the number of bits in the address. A constant frequency cyclic reference signal H is divided by logic pulses from the head to produce a signal SYNCHRO. The bit of each address is determined by combining the SYNCHRO signals and a pulse representative of the binary value of each bit that depends on the temporal position of a pulse within a period of signal SYNCHRO. The number of cells is counted, each time a bit is determined. The address is sampled bit by bit and transferred to a storage member throughout the counting and sampling operations.

Method of reading addresses on a magnetic recording medium and apparatus

An apparatus for positionally controlling the movable head assembly of a magnetic disc memory unit. In a first state, the head assembly is accelerated under substantially free conditions. In a second or deceleration state, the assembly speed is compared with and regulated by a series of theoretical speeds set in accordance with the actual speed attained by the movable head assembly during the first state.
