This invention relates to the protection of the teeming flow or stream of molten metal contained in a vessel and passing through a plate-type valve or cut-off device of the kind comprising a stationary plate and a displaceable plate that is provided with at least one output nozzle. A gas which is substantially inert with respect to the metal and has a pressure slightly higher than atmospheric pressure is fed into the aforesaid device, and this gas surrounds the metal while the latter passes through the said device, in such manner as to isolate the same from the ambient air by an uninterrupted protective gaseous barrier.

Method and apparatus for the protection of molten metal flows in furnaces

This invention relates to the production of carbon black by means of an incomplete air-acetylene combustion reaction. The apparatus comprises heating means arranged around an acetylene jet and arranged to cause heat cracking of the acetylene molecules prior to the combustion reaction. The invention is applicable in particular for forming linings for facing moulds or the like used in metallurgy or glass-making, for forming insulating facings on conveying elements and for lubricating drawing heads.

Production of carbon black by an incomplete air-acetylene combustion

A method and apparatus for the heat treatment of industrial wastes wherein at least some of the constituent materials of the wastes are subjected to combustion and/or to pyrolysis to produce flue gases and, in some applications, a residue. The supply of an oxygenated combustion-supporting gas to the wastes is regulated as a function of at least one sensed predetermined characteristic of the flue gases. The oxygenated gas may be a mixture of air and substantially pure oxygen, the feed rate of one or both of these being regulated in response to the sensed temperature and/or oxygen content of the flue gases. Such regulation maintains the oxygen content of the flue gases within the range of from 0 to 7%; and the temperature of the flue gases may be maintained from 400.degree. to 1200.degree. C. and, preferably within a range of 50.degree. C. in this region.
