The device for charging metalliferous materials 7 into a furnace 3 compri a charging tube 1, inside which are arranged supports 8 distributed over an entire non-straight section of this, for example similarly to the stairs of a flight of stairs descending towards the furnace. Passages are provided between the supports 8, and means 10 for the vibration of the supports are provided. The materials progressively descend on the supports 8 towards the furnace and are simultaneously preheated by the hot gases introduced into the tube, circulating through the materials and via the passages 9 and extracted via the outlet orifice 5.

Device for the charging of materials into a furnace and the preheating

A wall electrode for a D.C. powered electric arc furnace for the processing of metals in a liquid state, especially steel. The electrode is constituted mainly (a) by a metallic bar (4) one of whose ends comes into contact with the metallic bath (6), while a portion (7) of its other end extends to the exterior of the furnace; (b) by a sleeve (8) of thermally and electrically conductive material, energy-cooled by a flow of cooling fluid, surrounding the portion (7) of the other end of the bar at a distance therefrom; (c) by a nipple (9) of good electrically conductive material extending the aforementioned portion (7) of the other end of the bar; and (d) by a connection of the nipple and the sleeve to the same bar of an electrical supply. The invention takes into account the effects of differential expansion between the cold sleeve (8) and the alternately warm and cold bar (4), and permits a good thermal exchange and a good electrical contact between bar and sleeve to be maintained during repeated sequences of resmelting and resolidification of the bar.

Electrical connecting device to be placed in contact with a molten metallic mass, comprising an elongated metallic body (5) introduced through the wall of a container, to be placed in contact with the metallic bath by one of its ends, the other end constituting a terminal portion (8) projecting to the outside of the container wall, a sleeve (9) made of good thermal and electrical conductive material surrounding and contacting the terminal portion, the sleeve being connected to a charged electrical source and cooled by circulation of a cooling fluid. The device is used when contact between an electrode and a molten mass is required, and eliminates the risk of tapping from excessive melting of the electrode.

Electric connecting device for contacting a molten metallic mass

A roll for guiding a cast metal strand emanating from a continuous casting machine comprises a cylindrical envelop rotatable about its axis by contact with the cast metal strand. A pair of tubular spindles project from opposite ends of the envelop coaxially fixed thereto and rotably mounted in the region of the outer ends in ball bearings fixed to the machine frame. A central tubular arbor equiped in a central portion thereof with an inductor extends with radial clearance through the spindles and is supported at end portions thereof projecting beyond the spindles in cradles fixed to the machine frame. A key or the like is provided in one of the cradles engaging in a cutout of the central arbor to prevent rotation of the latter during rotation of the envelop and the spindles connected thereto.

Tubular roll for continuous metal casting machines

An electric furnace for induction heating of metallic products comprises a planar inductor providing a sliding magnetic field, the inductor being incorporated in a pair of transversely spaced walls defining between themselves a space into which the product to be heated is inserted, a layer of refractory material at that side of each wall which borders the space and an independent cooling screen sandwiched between each wall and the respective layer of refractory material, in which the screen is constituted by a plurality of parallel, adjacent metal tubes out of mutual contact with each other to define between themselves electrically insulating spaces, preferably filled with electrically insulating material, and in which the tubes extend normal to the flow of the primary current through the inductor. Preferably at least one of the walls together with the respective refractory layer and screen is movable toward and away from the other wall to accommodate metal products of different widths in the space.

Electric induction furnace with electrically discontinued cooling screen

A metallurgical induction heating apparatus has an upwardly cupped induction coil having a housing formed with an upper rim and containing a heavy-duty coil. A crucible formed of a metallic base pan and a metallic holding collar interconnected by a plurality of upright tubular tierods so as to clamp a multiplicity of refractory bricks has an annular upper support body which extends outwardly beyond an upper mounting ring to which the upper ends of the tierods are connected and which rests on the rim of the induction heater. Means is provided for circulating a coolant fluid upwardly through the tierods and into an annular compartment formed inside the support body. A hood may be placed over this arrangement in gas-tight contact with the upper surface of the annular body so that the interior of the crucible can be evacuated or filled with an inert gas.

Metallurgical induction heating apparatus

A crucible for an induction heating apparatus has a base pan and a collar between which lies a refractory lining. Respective lower and upper mounting rings secured to the base pan and the collar are vertically interconnected by an annular array of non-round-section tierods that are tubular so a coolant can be passed through them. These tierods further have angularly juxtaposed sides which define spaces of outwardly decreasing angular width. Wedge-shaped blocks of refractory and electrically insulating material tightly fit between the sides of the rods and are of outwardly decreasing angular width. Inside these blocks the crucible is lined with further layers of refractory material.
