A Hookes universal joint has a yoke (15) which comprises a connecting element (24) and limb elements (28, 29) detachably secured thereto. Each limb element has a bore (31, 110) which receives a respective limb of the joint cross member either with the intermediary of a bearing cup (32) or directly. The limb elements further comprise flanges (34, 123) which face complementary parts of the connecting element, and the flanges and connecting element have inter-engaging splines (38). Bolts (36, 114) hold the limb elements to the connecting element. Lugs (40) on the connecting elements center the cross member in the joint.

A sealing device for a universal joint comprising an annular cup surrounding each branch of a spider element of the universal joint and fixed with a bearing ring capping the end of the associated branch. A flexible sealing element having lips on the periphery thereof is engaged with an inner circular flange of the annular cup. According to the invention, the annular cup comprises a cylindrical skirt mounted to bear against a flange of the corresponding branch of the spider element, the skirt extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the circular flange of the annular cup. This arrangement reduces the interference between the annular cup and the flexible sealing element, which is composed of rubber, to thereby increase the effectiveness of the seal afforded by the device.

A joint comprises a tripod element connected to a wheel shaft and provided with three trunnions on which are mounted rollers received in runways formed in a tulip element connected to a driving shaft. A mushroom element disposed in the tripod element bears against the tulip element, and a muzzle element axially retains the tripod element against the tulip element. The radius of curvature of the spherical dome of the mushroom element and/or of the tripod element is such that its center of curvature is offset toward the spherical dome relative to the axial plane of the tripod element. This arrangement eliminates vibrations and seizure which are liable to occur for intermediate angles of operation of the joint.

Each trunnion of a spider is provided with an axial lubricating conduit having an outer portion forming a reservoir of increased diameter. Each conduit contains a combined device having an upstream part forming a constricted passage with the narrow portion of the conduit and an intermediate part in the form of a skirt and forming a stop valve. In order to ensure the positioning of this device, the skirt cooperates with a shoulder of the conduit, and a third part of the device cooperates with the end of an associated bearing bush. In this way, formation of air bubbles in the course of the filling of the conduits is avoided and the lubricant is retained in the reservoir during the course of operation.

Lubricating device, in particular for a universal joint spider

An intermediate bearing support mounting for a sectional drive line is disclosed. The intermediate bearing support includes a cushion housing with an antifriction bearing. A coupling part, which may be a coupling flange or a jaw of a universal joint having detachable bearing pads, is fitted in the antifriction bearing and has a splined cylindrical shank telescoping in an internally splined sleeve fixed on a tubular drive section. The coupling part has, opposite the cylindrical shank, a separable connection with another drive section of the drive line, which may either be a plate with a centering bearing surface and threaded fasteners or the jaw of a universal joint having detachable bearing pads. This arrangement reduces the overhang of the universal joint in relation to the bearing support.

The object of this invention is to improve the performance of the tulip members in the regions of connection or attachment between the petal portions and the adjacent shaft, this result being obtained by simple means. For this purpose, whereas the rest of the member (the raceways, bottom, cavities for the attachment of members effecting an axial retention) is carburized or carbonitrided, the connection regions are substantially devoid of any carburizing or carbonitriding.

Block bearings designed to equip the trunnions of the spider of the joint are provided for fixing by lugs to a flange of the joint mounted on a shaft to be coupled. They include drive tenons clampable in a corresponding groove formed in the contacting surface of the flange, as well as centering end pieces situated at the base of said tenons, towards the inside of the cardan joint. The improved joint finds application in transmissions through block bearings, in heavy vehicles.
