A watch case is described made of metal or metal compound, comprising a back, a middle and a bezel. The case is made up of a stack of plates with one plate forming the back cover and the others being formed with openings and forming the middle and the bezel.

The present invention relates to a dark colored composition based on liquid crystals, especially for use in a dichroic display cell. It comprises a mixture of liquid crystals and of dyes respectively red, yellow and blue. The red dye is the 4,4'-bis(p-dimethylamino-phenylazo)-2-methyl-azobenzene; the yellow dye is the 4,4'-bis(p-methoxy-phenylazo)-2-methyl-azobenzene; and the blue dye in an anthraquinonic dye of formula (III), ##STR1## in which A is ##STR2## and B is H or ##STR3## where R and R', indentical or different, are a lower alkyl or alkoxy group, one of the A and B being H when the other is not H.

Dark colored composition based on liquid crystals

A composition for use in an electro-optical device, particularly a display device, contains anthraquinone pleochroic dye of formula (I): ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is a substituted or unsubstituted amino group or a hydroxy group; R.sub.2 is a hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted amino, a hydroxy or a cyano group; each of R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which are identical or different, is a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted amino group, a hydroxy, a nitro or a cyano group; R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group; n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, the Rs being identical or different when n is 2, 3 or 4; and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a hydroxy or mercapto group, a straight, branched or cyclic C.sub.1-16 alkyl radical, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a group of formula OR', OAr, SR', SAr, COOR', COOAr, COO--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --R', OOCR', OOCAr, OOC--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --R', CONHR', CONHAr, NHR', NHAr, NHCOR', NHCOAr, OCOOR', OCOOAr, CH.dbd.N--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --R', N.dbd.CH--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --R', N.dbd.N--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --R' or ##STR2## where R' is a hydrogen atom or a straight, branched or cyclic C.sub.1-10 alkyl residue. Compounds of formula (I) have a high order parameter and are very stable.

Composition based on liquid crystal for electro-optical device

A composition for use in an electro-optical device, particularly a display device, contains anthraquinone pleochroic dye of formula (I): ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is a substituted or unsubstituted amino group or a hydroxy group; each of R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which are identical or different, is a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted amino group, a hydroxy group or a nitro group; R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group; n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, the Rs being identical or different when n is 2, 3 or 4; X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a hydroxy or mercapto group, a straight, branched or cyclic C.sub.1-16 alkyl radical, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a group of formula ##STR2## where R' is a hydrogen atom or a straight, branched or cyclic C.sub.1-10 alkyl residue, and Y is a hydrogen atom or a side chain of the formula: ##STR3## where X', R' and n' have the same definitions as and are respectively identical to or different from X, R and n, the side chain being in position 6 when the compound is substituted in position 2 and in position 7 when it is substituted in position 3. Compounds of formula (I) have a high order parameter and are very stable.

The liquid crystal-base composition for an electro-optical device contains an anthraquinone pleochroic coloring agent of formula (I) as defined in claim 1, that is to say, with in particular at least one hydroxy or amino group in position 1 and a heterocyclic side chain which is directly substituted in position 2, or 2 and 6, or 3, or 3 and 7. The compounds (I) have a high order parameter and are stable, thereby imparting to the compositions the properties required for use thereof for example in a display device. ##STR1##

Liquid crystal-base composition for an electro-optical device

To prepare a masking agent resistant to temperature, one adds silica powder to a photoresist. The mixture thus obtained is used to produce selective deposition of a layer of material on a substrate. The mixture of photoresist and silica powder serves as a photo-sensitive protective material which is then eliminated partially by selective exposure to light and use of a photographic developer. The temperatures involved in the deposition of the layer of desired material, for instance tin oxide, are about 500.degree. C. (deposition in the vapor phase), and the photo-sensitive material would be liable to destruction if it did not contain silica powder. It is then necessary, once the deposition of the desired material has been effected, to increase the temperature of the workpiece up to about 540.degree. C. to destroy and, hence, to eliminate the protective material.

In a sandwich type electro-optic display device which includes a transparent conductive substrate, an electrochromic layer (e.g. tungsten oxide applied to the substrate), a counterelectrode spaced from the electrochromic layer and a conductive medium, e.g. an acidic liquid ion conductive medium (sulfuric acid-glycerine solution) located in the space between the two electrodes; a protective layer deposited in situ on the electrochromic layer resulting from the doping of the liquid electrolyte with a salt of a cation having an ionic radius no less than 0.99 Angstrom units according to the classification of Pauling. Soluble isopolytungstic acid is formed at the interface between the electrochromic layer and the conductive medium as an 'interfacial layer'. The great cation salt selected is Ba.sup.++ and complexes with the polyacid to form a precipitate upon said electrochromic layer to form a protective layer therefor substantially inhibiting further attack on said electrochromic layer by the acidic conductive medium.
