A filter apparatus for removing small molecule chemotherapy agents from blood is provided. The filter apparatus comprises a housing with an extraction media comprised of polymer coated carbon cores. Also provided are methods of treating a subject with cancer of an organ or region comprising administering a chemotherapeutic agent to the organ or region, collecting blood laded with chemotherapeutic agent from the isolated organ, filtering the blood laden with chemotherapeutic agent to reduce the chemotherapeutic agent in the blood and returning the blood to the subject.

Apparatus for removing chemotherapy compounds from blood

The present invention provides an automated system and method to isolate nucleated blood cells from whole blood or bone marrow. A disc mounted to a centrifuge system with spinning rotor is used to manipulate cells by channeling fluids while subjected to high gravitational field. The disc embodies at least two axisymmetric processing stations connected by a circular channel. Each station contains multiple chambers connected by fluidic channels to controllably transfer fluids. First stage separation allows for the isolation of the buffy coat layer while the second stage separation utilizes gradient density fluids to isolate the targeted nucleated cells from the buffy coat layer in the spinning disc.

Automated system and method to isolate specific cells from blood or bone marrow

A whole blood collection system includes an automated pump/control unit and an accompanying disposable blood set. When combined and connected to a source of anticoagulant, these elements allow automatic priming of the blood set with anticoagulant and automatic collection of anticoagulated blood product according to three different collection modes. The unit's pump and the blood set are specially designed to cooperate during the collection process to assure that the collected product has a precise blood to anticoagulant ratio. During the collection procedure, the pump/control unit automatically collects data relating to the procedure. Additional data specifically identifying components of the blood set, such as the blood collection bag, along with identification data on the donor's registration form may be scanned into the pump/controller unit by a scanner associated with the unit; this facilitates positive sample identification and tracking. At the end of the procedure, a printer in the pump/controller unit automatically prints out this information so that a detailed record is immediately available about the collected blood product, the procedure for collecting it and the source of the product, i.e., the donor.

This invention is based on combining dual heating means to warm the infused blood or other fluids to a normal body temperature and to compensate for any heat loss from the intravenous line. The infusate is directly heated to a normothermic temperature inside the apparatus as it flows in a plastic pouch having a winding shape passage. A particular object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved intravenous line heat exchanger to further warm the infusate at high flow rates, or to compensate for any heat loss to the environment at low or stagnant flow rates. The present invention provides a closed circuit heating fluid for the intravenous heat exchanger. The heated fluid used to warm the infusate in the intravenous line is maintained in a clean and isolated circuit. Either dray or wet fluids are used to warm the infusate in the intravenous line heat exchanger. The wet warming fluid is supplied in a disposable pouch fitted inside a warming chamber and integrated with the intravenous line. A peristaltic pump is used to drive the warming fluid in a closed circuit between the pouch and the heat exchanger. The wet fluid remains in the closed circuit, and does not contact the apparatus preventing any build up of mold or fungus. The closed fluid circuit eliminates the need for unnecessary cleaning and periodic maintenance as it is done to the conventional water tank in the existing blood warmers.
