The invention relates to a connector for separably connecting a coaxial cable to a pair of parallel, spaced conductive pins, particularly the output contact pins of an integrated circuit. It includes a tubular conductive body (13) adapted to be affixed to the outer conductor (14) of the coaxial cable (1) at the end of the latter, and provided internally with means (15) for separably connecting the central conductor (16) of the coaxial cable to one of the pins (7), the tubular body having, near the end of the coaxial cable, a conductive tubular arm (18) with an axis parallel to the axis of the tubular body, and in contact with the outer conductor of the coaxial cable, the arm being arranged to receive removably contact means (21, 22, 23) adapted to provide an electrical contact with the second pin (8) and the tubular arm (18).

An optical fiber connection base for receiving an optical fiber positioned and centered in a ferrule having a tubular axial extension with a passage into which the fiber is introduced and immobilized with its front end coplaner with the front end of the tubular extension. The base has a unitary tubular body with a front support. An interior projection having a convex bearing surface extends rearwardly into the bore of the body from the rear face of the front support. The front support and projection have an axial opening to receive the tubular extension of a ferrule inserted into the body from the rear of the bore. An annular conical wall of the ferrule seats on the covex bearing surface of the body along a circular line of contact at a predetermined distance from the front face of the front support, so that the front end of the ferrule is centered and coplaner with the front face of the support.

A method of mechanically locking an interior element in an outer body with deformable material. The deformable material is permanently deformed against the interior element through circumferentially spaced radial holes in the outer body. This forms a core of deformed material between the inner element and outer body, with some deformable material in each opening. The radial position of the inner element can then be adjusted without shifting the inner element axially, using punch or press elements which are inserted in selected radial openings to further deform the material and thus adjust the inner element radially. The method is particularly useful for centering an optical fiber fixed within an inner element, by so adjusting the radial position of the inner element in an outer ferrule body.

An optical fiber connector in which individual optical fibers are precisely centered at their opposed ends, with respect to each other, without the requirement of precise manufacturing tolerances of the connector parts. An individual optical fiber having an elastic sheath is centered within a rigid sleeve by a plurality of balls, which can be metal, circumferentially spaced around the elastic sheath of the optical fiber, and which radially compress the elastic sheath to precisely center the fiber with respect to the rigid sleeve. The balls can be retained in a cage of an optical ferrule against both radial escape and any significant axial displacement relative to the fiber. This arrangement permits connecting and disconnecting the individual fibers from the connector, with a low coupling and uncoupling force since the balls can roll and therefore do not damage either the rigid sleeve or the elastic sheath of a fiber.

A cable is prepared for mounting a connector, by initially deforming a helically wound strip of the cable to prevent it from unwinding. Then, an outer braided conductor and an outer sheath are cut and stripped from the cable end. Next, a sleeve is inserted beneath the braided conductor, a ferrule is positioned around the cable at the sleeve and the ferrule is clamped to the sleeve. The sleeve can have a flange for mounting the connector in clamped relation on the flange.
