A coke oven battery has a refractory brick structure comprising a row of coking chambers (1) between an oven roof (9) and a regenerator roof (10) and a row of regenerative chambers (2) between the regenerator roof (10) and a regenerator floor (11). In order to provide protection (e.g. for an external steel frame) against leakage of inflammable gas, cladding (16-24) of metal foil is provided at both the pusher side and the coke side. This cladding makes a substantially gas tight seal with the refractory brick. The foil preferably has a thickness of 0.05 to 0.25 mm.

In a shaft furnace having a metal shell, a refractory lining of relatively high thermal conductivity and cooling bodies which project inwardly through the shell into the lining and through which in operation cooling liquid flows, has a high uniformity of temperature in the lining. In order to improve its operational characteristics, in particular to improve temperature uniformity yet further while reducing heat loss, the shell and the cooling bodies are screened from the lining. Between the cooling bodies and the refractory lining and between the shell and the refractory lining there are respectively first and second thin layers of refractory material having in each case a .lambda.-value of less than 5 kcal/mh .degree.C., preferably less than 1.5 kcal/mh .degree.C. The thin layers may be of refractory felt or refractory plates.

In a shaft furnace having a metal shell, a refractory furnace lining inside the shell and a taphole construction comprising a drilled taphole extending through a plug located in an aperture in the shell and a taphole brick structure forming part of said furnace lining, the taphole brick structure at least partly consists of at least one taphole brick of high thermal conductivity material selected from the group comprising graphite, semi-graphite and material of equivalent heat conductivity, there further being screening means comprising material of substantially lower heat conductivity coefficient than graphite and semi-graphite located between said taphole brick and said furnace shell.

A coke oven battery has a continuous roof and uprights at each of the pusher and coke sides. The uprights are connected by ties extending through pipes embedded in the roof. To provide cooling for the ties, a massive metal cooling member extends upwardly from each pipe to the upper side of the roof, to conduct heat away from the pipe. The cooling member may contain a chamber forming an evaporation cooling system.

The refractory bottom of a shaft furnace, e.g. a blast furnace has a graphite layer, above it an intermediate layer of lower coefficient of thermal conductivity (.lambda.-value) and above the intermediate layer a third layer of yet lower .lambda.-value. To control the penetration of molten metal into the bottom and in particular to achieve a stable location of the solidification isotherm in the intermediate layer, the material of the intermediate layer is one having a .lambda.-value of 12 to 30 kcal/m.h. .degree.C. This material may be semi-graphite. Such material does not undergo a change of .lambda.-value when permeated by the molten metal.

A shaft furnace has a refractory lining within its armour and cooling plates located in recesses in the lining. In order to make it easier to remove and replace the cooling plates and to improve heat transfer, it is now proposed to construct the recess walls of special shaped members so that the recess retains its shape. The shaped members include elongate side members, a cover member resting on the elongate members, a bottom member below the elongate members and a front member between the front edge of the cooling plate and the furnace interior. Copper sheets may be provided between the cooling plate and these shaped members.

Shaft furnace having a shell, a refractory lining along at least part of its inner surface of a material which contains at least 50% free carbon, and which furthermore is provided with a water-cooled tuyere which is in contact with the refractory lining, including at least one extra layer of a material provided below the cooled tuyere in the refractory lining, over at least part of its thickness and substantially transversely to the direction towards the cooled tuyere which at the temperature of this layer during operation cannot locally react chemically with water and/or with the reaction products of water and carbon and a closed circular gutter which is connected to one or more de-watering openings through the shell, at least one of the extra layers at the side of the furnace shell being connected to said gutter.

In a shaft furnace which has a wall comprising of a shell and stave-coolers inside the shell, and a refractory lining of the wall supported by projections (supporting cams) on the stave-coolers, there are provided special bricks, preferably of material of superior refractoriness, strength, chemical resistance and wear-resistance, which rest on the projections and extend beyond the projections both towards and away from the shell. The bricks are fixed in the furnace wall, for instance by means of a ramming mass, and are preferably received in recessed in the stave-coolers.

A shaft furnace having a refractory-lined wall at least part of which is provided with liquid-cooled cooling plates which extend into the lining and are grouped in a plurality of horizontal planes. The cooling plates in each plane are in heattransfer contact with an associated ring extending around the furnace which consists of refractory material of a first kind having a heat conductivity coefficient (.lambda.) at 20.degree.C. of at least 25 kilocalories/hour.meter..degree.C. The interior face of the lining also is provided at least partly by refractory material of a second kind which has high resistance to wear and chemical attack and has a minimum reaction temperature (Tu) of at least 600.degree.C. and a heat conductivity coefficient (.lambda.) at 20.degree.C. of at least 8 kilocalories/hour.meter..degree.C.
