An installation for crystallizing a liquid from a solution, for example for freeze-concentrating effluent, having a nucleation zone, a ripening zone and a separator where the nucleation zone is constructed as a vacuum crystalline, such that the installation is of relatively simple and inexpensive construction, can easily be scaled up and is suitable for concentrating liquids containing undissolved particles, such as, for example, precipitated salts.

Method and apparatus for crystallization from liquids

The invention relates to a crystallization apparatus and to a method for crystallizing a liquid from a solution, a mixture of liquids or a suspension. The apparatus comprises a growth zone in a vertically positioned tank, which growth zone is positioned below a nucleation zone. Via a delivery line the seed crystals are fed from the nucleation zone to the bottom end of the growth zone. In the growth zone the ice slurry slowly moves in a vertical direction at such a low velocity that heavier particles are able to precipitate and to be discharged at the bottom end. Preferentially, the nucleation zone comprises a vacuum apparatus for effecting a reduction in pressure in the nucleation zone to between 10,and 7&middot;10,bar. Using the apparatus according to the present invention it is possible for waste water and effluent to be concentrated in a simple manner, clogging of, for example, filters owing to the settling of solid particles being prevented.

Method and apparatus for freezeconcentrating substances

An installation for separating and purifying solids from a suspension and/or for leaching out solid particles has a cylinder and a piston movable therein. A sealing part of the piston is in contact with the interior wall of the cylinder. A filter is positioned some distance away from the sealing part of the piston. A discharge chamber is located between the filter and the sealing part of the piston. A pump chamber is formed below the sealing part of the piston and a washing column chamber containing a packed bed of solid particles is formed above the filter. During a downward pump stroke of the piston, suspension is forced, via at least one connecting channel between the pump chamber and the washing column chamber, to the washing column chamber. During a compression stroke, liquid is brought via the filter to the discharge chamber and discharged via a discharge line. Solid particles, such as crystals, remain behind on the filter and are compressed against the packed bed. The connecting channel can be located inside the cylinder. In that case the piston has a conical jacket with a streamlined non-return valve. The connecting channel between pump chamber and washing column chamber can also be located outside the cylinder. The installation has relatively simple seals and feed and discharge lines fixed to the cylinder in a stationary position. The installation can also be scaled up easily.

Installation for separating and purifying solids

Process for freeze-concentrating food liquids such as fruit juices, coffee extracts, beer and so forth, in which the substance to be treated is conveyed through a multi-stage freeze concentrator and is conveyed from the freeze concentrator stage with the highest concentration to a module in which the concentration, and thus the viscosity, is increased by crystallization, and a partial separation of mother liquor is obtained by means of a contrifuge.

Apparatus for continuously removing from the mother liquor the crystals contained in a suspension of crystals in the mother liquor and for washing the crystals with a washing liquid, comprising a closed cylindrical chamber, feed devices for the suspension of crystals, discharge devices for removing the disintegrated crystal bed, feed devices for washing liquid, filter devices in the form of a flat ring for extracting mother liquor from the suspension supplied, while retaining crystals, transport devices in the form of rotating blades which are fitted in the cylindrical chamber above the filter devices and stator blades above the rotating blades being able to move backwards and forwards over a certain stroke in the axial direction between the filter devices and the stator blades fitted at a distance above the filter devices.

A counter-current process for purifying chemicals using cyrstal purification. The unit process has a purification and recovery section which contain substantially identical stages. In operation, the unit process purifies the chemical by utilizing sequential recrystallizer. The size and purity of the crystals increases from the last recrystallizer in the recovery section through each subsequent stage to the last recrystallizer in the purification section.
