An apparatus generates outgoing data to be provided on an optical disk in a burst cutting area. The burst cutting area further comprises markings which cause a marking frequency spectrum when reading out the burst cutting area. The apparatus comprises a channel coder which receives processed data and supplies the outgoing data having an outgoing data frequency spectrum with suppressed DC-content. The apparatus further comprises a data processing device which generates the processed data to obtain an outgoing frequency spectrum wherein a frequency component causing interference with a low frequent component of the markings is suppressed or not present.

Detection of data in burst cutting area of optical disk

An information carrier for holding user information, the information carrier comprising access information in the form of access information bits for accessing the user information, the access information bits being stored on the information carrier in a variation of a parameter, which variation is detectable by integration detection. The access information bits are scrambled according to a pre-determined scrambling method. By scrambling the access information bits according to a pre-determined scrambling method, detection of the access information is not possible as long as the scrambling method is not known. Using the integration detection technique, the only way to obtain the access information is by knowing how the signal obtained after reading-out the area comprising the access information bits must be processed. In this way illegal retrieval of the user information is further prevented.

An apparatus generates outgoing data (OD) to be provided on an optical disk () in a burst cutting area (). The burst cutting area () further comprises markings () which cause a marking frequency spectrum (MFS) when reading out the burst cutting area (). The apparatus comprises a channel coder () which receives processed data (PD) and supplies the outgoing data (OD) having an outgoing data frequency spectrum (DFS) with suppressed DC-content. The apparatus further comprises a data processing device () which generates the processed data (PD) to obtain an outgoing frequency spectrum (DFS) wherein a frequency component causing interference with a low frequent component of the markings () is suppressed or not present.

Compatibility information embedded in an optical medium modifies actions allowed by predetermined non-compatible optical disc drives on the optical medium, such as optical disc drives that may suffer damage if certain actions are performed on the optical medium. For instance, a compatibility engine of the optical disc drive applies compatibility information read from an optical medium to determine restrictions to impose on the use of the optical medium, such as restricting the optical disc drive from writing to the optical medium, reading from the optical medium or performing any operations until an update to the optical disc drive firmware is performed either automatically or by display of a compatibility user interface at an information handling system associated with the optical disc drive. In one embodiment, the compatibility information identifies incompatible optical disc drives and firmware versions by unique identifiers.

An optical disc mediumhaving a wobbled track grooveincludes three wobble patterns including a flat wobble pattern, a positive pulse wobble pattern, and a negative pulse wobble pattern. In the flat wobble pattern, the amplitude of the wobble from the lengthwise direction of the track groove is zero such that the track groove is flat. In the positive pulse wobble pattern, the amplitude of the wobble from the lengthwise direction of the track groove is positive such that the track groove is wobbled in a first direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction. Further, in the negative pulse wobble pattern, the amplitude of the wobble from the lengthwise direction of the track groove is negative such that the track groove is wobbled in a second direction opposite to the first direction. Then, three data values can be recorded using three distinctive wobble patterns.

In an optical disc of the present invention, there are recorded in a wobble the address information modulated in accordance with the MSK (minimum shift keying) system and the address information modulated in accordance with a modulation system in which even harmonics signals are added to a sinusoidal carrier signal and in which the polarity of the harmonics signal is changed depending on the sign of the data for modulation.

A method and device for adding or extracting a secondary information signal to/from a runlength-limited code sequence, includes detecting a polarity of a runlength at a first predetermined position of the runlength-limited code sequence and setting a parameter reflecting the degree of freedom that is present in the runlength-limited channel code, e.g., the selection of a merging bit pattern in the CD-standard, on the basis of the detected polarity so as to obtain a predetermined polarity of a runlength at a subsequent second predetermined position of the runlength-limited code sequence. The predetermined polarity then corresponds to a binary value of the secondary information. Thus, a side-channel with a small capacity is provided, which is positioned very close to the physical channel such that the secondary information is hard to be detected from the EFM bit stream. Therefore, the side-channel can be used as a hidden channel for copy protection purposes.

Method and device for adding or extracting a secondary information signal to/from a RLL code sequence

In an optical disc, a wobble signal is to be detected by a simple configuration. In the optical disc, the address information, modulated onto a sinusoidal cannier signal by adding even harmonics signals to the sinusoidal carrier signal and by changing the polarity of the harmonics signals, is formed into the wobble signal. In detecting the wobble signal from the optical disc to demodulate the address information, in a method for detecting the wobble signal, an even harmonics signal and data clocks are generated, and the even harmonics signal so generated are multiplied with the reproduced wobble signal. The resulting product signal is integrated every data clock. The sign of the digital information is verified based on the integrated value at an end edge of the data clock.
