It is described a magnetic field differential sensor system for measuring rotational movements of a shaft. The described magnetic field sensor system () comprises (a) a biasing magnet () configured for generating a biasing magnetic field; (b) a magnetic wheel () having a wheel axis and a circumferential surface which comprises a regular structure of teeth () and gaps () arranged in an alternating manner, wherein (i) the magnetic wheel () is attachable to the shaft and (ii) the magnetic wheel () can be magnetized by the biasing magnetic field; and (c) a magnetic sensor arrangement () comprising four magnetic sensor elements () being connected with each other in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. Respectively two of the magnetic sensor elements () are assigned to one half bridge of the Wheatstone bridge. Further, the four magnetic sensor elements () are arranged within an y-z plane, wherein an x-axis, a y-axis and a z-axis define an orthogonal Cartesian coordinate system in which (i) the x-axis is oriented parallel with the wheel axis of the magnetic wheel (), (ii) the y-axis is oriented tangential to the circumferential surface of the magnetic wheel (), and (iii) the z-axis is the symmetry line through the center of the biasing magnet () and the center of the magnetic wheel (). The magnetic sensor elements can be hall sensor elements or magnetoresistive sensor elements ().

A magnetic field sensor system for measuring rotational movements of a shaft is disclosed. The sensor system includes a biasing magnet configured for generating a biasing magnetic field and a magnetic wheel having a wheel axis and a circumferential surface which comprises a regular structure of teeth and gaps arranged in an alternating manner. The magnetic wheel is attachable to the shaft and is magnetizable by the biasing magnetic field. A magnetoresistive sensor arrangement comprising four magnetoresistive sensor elements being connected with each other in a Wheatstone bridge, respectively two of the magnetoresistive sensor elements being assigned to one half bridge of the Wheatstone bridge. The four magnetoresistive sensor elements are arranged within an x-y plane.

A magnetic field sensor assembly for measuring an angular direction of a sensed magnetic field relative to the assembly is disclosed. The sensor assembly includes a sensor of a first type configured to sense an orientation of the sensed magnetic field, a sensor of a second type configured to measure an orientation and a direction of the sensed magnetic field and processing circuitry connected to each of the magnetic field sensors. The processing circuitry being configured to process output signals from the sensor of the first type to determine an uncorrected sensed magnetic field angle and to apply an offset angle to the uncorrected magnetic field angle dependent on a logical combination of signs of output signals from the sensors of the first and second types.

The invention provides a method for recording information in the form of a pattern of magnetic domains in a recording layer. The recording layer includes a material having a Curie temperature and grains, the grains having boundaries over which the exchange coupling is small. The method includes a first step of applying heat to the material, thereby heating an area of the recording layer to a temperature above the Curie temperature during a first interval. In a second step a magnetic field is applied to the area during a second interval, the second interval ending after the first interval.

A storage medium for thermally-assisted magnetic recording has a recording layer which substantially parallel tracks for recording information. The recording layer includes a series of recording regions, each region comprising a plurality of tracks for magnetically recording information. The tracks in a region have a pitch p, and a region extends a distance &frac12; p beyond a centre line of the outermost track of the region. Neighbouring regions are separated from one another by magnetically non-recording areas having a width substantially equal to or larger than the pitch p. The writing of one region does not have thermal cross-talk on other regions.
