A patterned organic monolayer or multiplayer film self-assembled on a solid substrate, the pattern consisting in a site-defined surface chemical modification non-destructively inscribed in the organic monolayer or multilayer by means of an electrically biased conducting scanning probe device, stamping device and/or liquid metal or metal alloy or any other device that can touch the organic monolayer or multilayer surface and inscribe therein a chemical modification pattern upon application of an electrical bias.

Constructive nanolithography

The invention relates to novel compounds which are suited for the production of multilayer films which have piezoelectric, and pyroelectric properties, and which provide second harmonic generation. The novel compounds are amphiphilic and it is possible to prepare from same polar single-layer and multi-layer films by depositing them on a substrate. When such substrate is a solid support, polar Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films are obtained. Upon compression of films of such compounds, at an air/water interface, stable Langmuir monolayers are formed.

N-heterocyclic amphiphilic amides

According to the invention organic monolayer films are applied to an electrically conductive substrate, resulting in an electrode which can be used in electrochemical processes. The said film serves as ultrathin membrane and allows certain selected species to approach the substrate and be detected. The film comprises active species which are selective towards specific species contained in mixture with others and a blocking surface sealing component. It is also possible to use one compound serving both purposes. The components of the film are attached to the substrate by a variety of means: adsorption, chemisorption, electro-chemical deposition.

Ionic recognition and selective response in self assembling monolayer

There is provided a process for the production of built up films by the stepwise adsorption of individual monolayers. The process comprises forming a first compact ordered monolayer on a polar solid substrate by adsorption of molecules at a solid fluid interface, and chemically activating the monolayer coated solid in order to introduce polar sites for the anchoring at a further monolayer on the top of the first one, and continuing, if desired, until the desired number of monolayers, one on the other, is obtained. The molecules used are elongated or flattened ones having at one end or side a polar moiety and at the other a non-polar one, which is subsequent to the monolayer formation chemically activated to render it polar and thus adapted to react with another such polar/non polar molecule, and so on. There may also be provided monolayers of such compounds and there may be inserted a desired functional group at the upper surface of the monolayer molecules to obtain a surface with desired surface properties. The non polar group can also be a non terminal one which is subsequently reacted. The multilayer films are of value in a wide range of applications, like ultrathin film components in microelectronics, for the production of artificial membranes, in optical devices, ultrathin photoresists, surface coatings with adhesive properties, molecular films useful in solar energy conversion and any other device where ordered ultrathin monolayer or multilayer films are useful and required.
