The presently disclosed subject matter is directed to nitrapyrin complexes and syntheses thereof finding particular utility in agricultural uses, e.g., directly applied to soil, or in combination with fertilizers to increase nutrient uptake and to inhibit nitrification and urease hydrolysis. More particularly, the subject matter is directed to nitrapyrin complexes, preferably containing specific types of carboxylic and sulfonate repeat units. Other uses of the nitrapyrin complexes and compositions containing nitrapyrin complexes are also disclosed.

Nitrapyrin compositions for enhancing nitrogen nutrient use efficiency and improving plant growth

Improved urease inhibitors comprise one or more polymers containing alkenylphenyl sulfonate repeat units, which may be applied to or mixed with a variety of urea-containing fertilizers in order to substantially prevent urea decomposition when applied to soil. The inhibitors may be in the form of homopolymers such as polystyrene sulfonate, or as copolymers containing alkenylphenyl sulfonate and other, different repeat units. The inhibitor polymers may be in free acid, partial salt, or complete salt forms, and are water soluble.

Compositions for controlling enzyme-induced urea decomposition

Provided herein are compositions and methods for controlling enzyme-induced urea decomposition attendant to the application of solid or liquid urea-containing fertilizers to soils. More particularly, the subject matter disclosed herein is concerned with selected triarylmethane compounds as urease inhibitors and their use, either alone or in combination with tetrapolymer synergists. Further, the disclosed compositions have good storage stability, long-lived activity in soil, and avoid the toxicity issues common with present-day urease inhibitors used in agriculture.

Triarylmethane compounds for controlling enzyme-induced urea decomposition

Polymeric compositions useful for use with solid or liquid phosphate fertilizers include one or more first copolymers having at least two repeat units selected from maleic, itaconic, and sulfonate repeat units, and one or more second copolymers having maleic and olefinic repeat units. The compositions are capable of synergistically reducing or eliminating phosphate fixation, and are relatively low in cost. The compositions may also be supplemented with product-marking dyes and second copolymers having high and low molecular weight profiles in order to control fines or dust during handling and application of solid phosphate fertilizers.

Polymeric compositions which minimize phosphate fixation

Water soluble polymeric compositions are provided including at least one polyanionic polymer component (e.g., a copolymer containing maleic and itaconic repeat units), and at least one high molecular weight component selected from copolymers different than the polyanionic polymer and preferably having dicarboxylic repeat units, and a cellulose or cellulose derivative. The compositions are preferably substantially free of hydrocarbons and can be used to coat solid fertilizers in order to reduce fines.

Polymeric compositions

Aqueous liquid formulations contain one or more anionic polymers, a high concentration of boron compounds, and a boron dispersant or solvent. The compositions are operable to maintain the boron content thereof in stable dispersion for at least 72 hours. The dispersant or solvent is selected from saturated aliphatic diols, glycols, hydroxyl-rich compounds, alpha-hydroxy acids, and mixtures thereof. Preferred polymers include dicarboxylic repeat units and optional sulfonate repeat units. The formulations have heretofore unattainable high boron contents, and are useful in agricultural contexts.

Polymer-boric acid compositions

Novel polyanionic polymers including families of repeat units, such as maleic, itaconic, and sulfonate repeat units. The polymers are at least tetrapolymers and may be in the acid form or as partial or complete salts. The polymers may be synthesized using free radical initiators in the presence of vanadium compounds. The polymers have a variety of uses, particularly in agricultural contexts.

Polyanionic polymers

Improved agriculturally useful products are provided, including solid materials such as nitrogenous fertilizers (e.g., urea), together with a polycarboxylated polymer selected from the group consisting of a salts of copolymers containing individual quantities of maleic and itaconic moieties. The polymer composition also includes from about 10-60% by weight of an organic drying agent such as a lower alcohol which enhances the quick drying properties thereof. The compositions may also include an amount of boron, and bimodal vinylic polymer made up of quantities of high and low molecular weight (MW) vinylic polymers such as PVA.
