The disclosure herein pertains to determining high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane eligibility of a vehicle and position of the vehicle with respect to an HOV lane. A method for an on board unit (OBU) of a vehicle may include receiving a traveler information message (TIM) from a roadside unit (RSU), the TIM having a payload including codes indicating lane parameters and HOV criteria of an HOV lane. The OBU determines whether or not the vehicle is HOV lane-eligible and whether or not the vehicle is in the HOV lane, and outputs a corresponding notification.

Self-driving and autonomous vehicles are very popular these days for scientific, technological, social, and economical reasons. In one aspect of this technology, one of the main concerns for an implementation of any V2X technology on a large scale is the issue of congestion control. In large cities and crowded highways during rush hours, each host vehicle can get messages from over 200 other vehicles and several road side units, all working on the same channel and trying to send and receive messages at the same time. With respect to the weather effect on signal, the signal path loss occurs whenever there is moderate (or moderate plus) rain, and because of that, the OBU communications packets are prone to get lost, or communication coverage region gets diminished, depending upon the intensity, speed, angle and temperature of the rainfall/snowfall droplets. A stylus that includes a tip portion that has a cavity. The cavity has a plurality of holes at a first end and a transmitter of acoustic, e.g., ultrasound waves at the end longitudinally opposite the first end. The tip portion has a tip. The tip end is less than a quarter of a wavelength from the exit ends of the holes. When the end of the tip is placed against a working surface, the acoustic waves travel from the transmitter through the cavity, exit the holes and travel less than a quarter of a wavelength to the working surface relatively close to the tip.

A writing implement and system using that writing implement are disclosed. The writing implement includes a pen having an elongated body with a plurality of light sources arranged around an outer surface of the body. Each light source has a unique identity. A pen controller that activates each light source to emit light such that the identity of that source can be ascertained by a detector external to the pen. The number of light sources is greater than or equal to 2, and the light sources are arranged such that at least one of the light sources is visible to a detector external to the pen at any time. The detector can then determine the angle of rotation of the pen relative to a fixed reference direction.

A transcription module having a mounting unit, acoustical receivers and an EM detector is disclosed. The mounting unit is adapted for positioning the transcription module over a work surface. First and second acoustical receivers are attached to the mounting unit. Each acoustical receiver includes a microphone positioned over a corresponding location on the work surface. Each microphone views the work surface at the corresponding location and is configured to receive acoustical signals from an input device operating over the work surface at another location. The EM detector detects an EM signal that is synchronized with the acoustical signals.

The pen transcription system includes a receiver having first and second acoustical sensors mounted on a planar base and separated from one another, an EM detector, and a controller. The first and second acoustical sensors detect an acoustical signal emitted by a moveable signal source. The EM detector detects an EM signal that is synchronized with the acoustical signal. The controller measures the difference in time of detection between the EM signal and the acoustical signals detected by the first and second acoustical sensors. The acoustical sensors include a detector and a housing surrounding the detector, the housing having an aperture defined by an axis. The acoustical sensor has a reception function that is symmetrical about the axis and the axis is substantially perpendicular to the base surface.

Methods and apparatus for configuring a writing surface

Methods and apparatus for using ultrasound to measure speed and acceleration in fluids is provided. Three exemplary embodiments are disclosed. The first exemplary embodiment measures fluid velocity, such as, for example, wind, under standard atmospheric pressure-temperature. The second exemplary embodiment measures gas velocity, such as, for example, wind, affected by and automatically calibrates for pressure-temperature. The third exemplary embodiment measures gas density, such as, for example, density altitude. Applications of the invention include wind direction and speed calculation in agriculture, aviation, hydraulics, and other industries. One of the advantages provided by the invention is there are no moving parts in making such measurements.

Ultrasound speed measurement of temperature and pressure effects

A transmitter pen location system is provided, in which a pen is adapted to send a repeated output signal to external receivers at two or more receiver locations, wherein the location of the pointing tip of the pen is determined in relation to the writing surface of a whiteboard. In one embodiment an output element, preferably an ultrasonic transducer, transmits a time dependent output signal from a single signal transmitter pen to two or more external receivers at two or more receiver locations. The direction of arrival of the output signal to each of the receiver locations is determined, and the pointing tip of the single transmitter pen is then determined, as the intersection of direction vectors from the pen to the external receivers. In another embodiment, the transducer transmits a time dependent output signal from the transmitter pen to three or more external receivers, wherein the received signal is processed to determine the time of arrival to each of the receivers, and the location of the pointing tip of the pen is determined as the calculated distance between the receivers. In another alternate embodiment having a dual signal transmitter pen, a third receiver located at a receiver location is used to determine the time of arrival of a secondary output signal, to determine the distance between the dual signal transmitter pen and the receiver location, while two or more receivers at the receiver location are used to determine the direction of arrival of the primary time dependent output signal. Alternative embodiments allow the transmission of supplementary information from the transmitter pen to the receivers, using waveshaping of the output signal.

Transmitter pen location system

A transmitter pen positioning system is provided, in which a pen, having multiple output elements, is used to accurately determine the location of the pointing tip of the pen, in relation to the writing area of a surface, such as a white board. The first output element, preferably an infrared transducer, transmits a first output signal from the transmitter pen. The second output element, preferably an ultrasonic transducer, transmits a second output signal, having a lower propagation velocity than the first output signal, from the transmitter pen to two or more receivers. In a basic embodiment, the first output signal arrives at one or more receivers generally concurrently. The second output signal, having a speed of propagation different from the speed of propagation of the first signal, is transmitted from the transmitter pen at a known time in relation to the first output signal, and arrives at each of the receivers at a time which is dependent on the velocity of the second signal and the distance between the transmitter pen and the receivers. The location of the pointing tip of the transmitter pen is then determined, by using the first signal as a boundary condition, by comparing the waveform of the second output signal to one or more stored prior second output signals to determine an accurate time of arrival, and by solving simultaneous equations. Alternative embodiments allow the transmission of supplementary information from the transmitter pen to the receivers, using either the first and/or second output signals, such as determined pen color, line color, width, and pen user identification.

A pen positioning system is provided, in which a pen, having multiple output elements, is adapted to accurately determine the location of the pointing tip of the pen, in relation to an electronic tablet. The output elements, preferably ultrasonic transmitters having distinct frequencies, are located a fixed distance from each other, and are also related in space to the pointing tip of the pen. The geometric relationship between the output elements and the pointing tip of the pen allows the location of the pointing tip to be determined, independent of the angle which the pen is inclined against the surface of the writing tablet. A detection system is used to receive the output signals from the output elements, isolate the output signals from each other, and process them independently to determine the location of the output elements and of the pointing tip of the pen. Alternative embodiments include an additional output element on a pressure sensitive shell of the pen, which allows the pen to accurately provide pressure sensitive output signal information.
