A metal cutting tool assembly comprising a rigid holder blade, an insert receiving slot formed in a leading end of the holder blade and defined between a resiliently displaceable clamping jaw formed integrally with the holder blade and rigid base jaw forming part of the holder blade, spaced apart displacement and supporting surfaces respectively formed in or on the clamping jaw and the holder, and a slot opening key, a pair of spaced apart projecting prongs of the key with adapted to engage the surfaces. At least one of the prongs is displaceable with respect to the holder blade so as resiliently to displace the clamping jaw outwardly with respect to the base jaw into an opening position for insertion or removal of an insert.

Clamping device for a cutting insert

A metal cutting tool assembly comprising a rigid holder blade, an insert receiving slot formed in a leading end of the holder blade and defined between a resiliently displaceable clamping jaw formed integrally with the holder blade and rigid base jaw forming part of the holder blade, spaced apart displacement and supporting surfaces respectively formed in or on the clamping jaw and the holder, and a slot opening key, with a pair of spaced apart projecting prongs of the key adapted to engage the surfaces. A metal cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert retained in an insert pocket of an insert holder. The cutting insert has two opposing side surfaces with a peripheral edge surface extending therebetween and a plurality of cutting portions. The peripheral edge surface has a plurality of abutment sections, each abutment section lying on a portion of a sidewall of an imaginary regular polygon. A plurality of cutting portions extend outwardly from the imaginary polygon and are equal in number to the number of side walls thereof. Each abutment section is located between two cutting portions. The insert holder has an insert pocket in which the cutting insert is retained with the peripheral edge surface being abutted at two abutment sections by two support walls of the insert pocket, the support walls being fixed and integral parts of the insert holder.

A double-ended parting or grooving insert comprising a central body portion and a pair of opposite cutting end portions; each cutting end portion having an upper rake surface and front and side relief flanks and a front cutting edge formed at an intersection of the rake surface and the front relief flank; the front relief flank comprising an upper relief flank surface; a lower abutment surface inset with respect to the upper and disposed substantially normally with respect to a longitudinal median plane intersecting the front cutting edges and an intermediate surface serving to bridge the upper and lower surfaces.

A cutting insert (1) has an insert body (2) with an upper central clamping surface (3) and a lower clamping surface (4) through which passes an axis of symmetry (A) about which the cutting insert is indexable. The insert body (2) has a pair of opposite and identical cutting end portions (8A,8B) disposed laterally with respect to the upper clamping surface. The cutting end portions (8A,8B) each have a rake surface (9A,9B), a front cutting edge (11A,11B) and side cutting edges (15A,16A,15B,16B). Planes (20A,20B) passing through the midpoints (21A,21B) of the front cutting edges (11A,11B) and being normal thereto are inclined in opposite senses with respect to the axis of symmetry (A) in an end view of the cutting insert. A front cutting edge (11A) has at least two component cutting edges (22A,23A,25A), each pair of adjacent component cutting edges (22A,23A;23A,25A) overlapping via a common bridging section (26A,27A) thereby providing chip splitting means, each component cutting edge (22A,23A,25A) being associated with localized chip control means (27A,29A,30A) including chip breaking means.

Cutting insert

A cutting tool assembly comprising an elongated tool shank having, at a side adjacent a leading end thereof, a shank holding portion and an exchangeable adaptor having an insert retaining portion for retaining a replaceable cutting insert and an adaptor mounting portion releasably scoured to the shank holding portion by two clamping screws. The clamping screws are inserted into respective adaptor through bores formed in the adaptor mounting portion and threaded bores formed in the shank holding portion, the threaded bores being substantially aligned with the respective adaptor through bores. One of the adaptor mounting and shank holding portions is formed with a recess and the other one is formed with a protrusion mating with the recess and received therein, the bores passing through the recess and the protrusion and being oriented transversely to an axis of relative rotation of a workpiece with respect to the tool. The axes of the threaded bores are located substantially in a reference plane of the tool assembly which plane passes, during operation of the tool, through the axis of rotation. The axes of the through bores are slightly offset with respect to axes of the respective threaded bores so that they are disposed closer to the insert retaining portion than the axes of the threaded bores and, preferably, on different sides with respect to the reference plane of the tool assembly.
