An electronic radiation thermometer utilizing temperature sensitive resistor (thermistor) as a radiometer sensor. The sensor is heated to higher than target temperature. Its resistance is maintained constant during measurement by a control circuit. Electric power required to balance radiation heat losses is proportional to net flux, which, in turn, depends on temperature of a target. That power value is processed by an electronic circuit to calculate target temperature. The thermometer probe does not absorb infrared radiation but emits it toward the target. The thermometer comprises reflective cavity with thermistor placed in a focal point, self-balancing resistive bridge with control amplifier and an electronic processing circuit. For the medical application, the thermometer is built in an elongated form and uses a disposable speculum, which is placed over the reflective cavity. Medical thermometer can take either core temperature from ear canal or mouth, or surface skin temperature.

A miniature passive infrared motion detector consists of an optical system, a pyroelectric polymer film and an electronic circuit. The optical system is made of a curved Fresnel lens and an elongated wave guide having a reflective inner surface. The polymer film is also curved with the same radius as the lens and has two interdigitized electrodes on the rear surface and one uniform electrode on the front surface. The front electrode is covered with infrared absorbent material. The electronic circuit contains a differential amplifier and a threshold detector.

Motion detector

A blood pressure measurement instrument controlled by a microprocessor has an inflatable cuff, a pump for inflating the cuff, an acoustic sensor and amplifier for processing auscultatory sounds and supplying signals to a microcomputer, a display for displaying blood pressure, and pressure sensor for measuring air pressure in the cuff and supplying signals to the microprocessor. The invention comprises an improved air bleed rate controller for providing a linearized bleed slope reference signal which is compared to an actual cuff pressure signal from the cuff pressure transducer, to control a variable opening bleed valve. The reference signal is applied at the initiation of the bleed control phase through a logic circuit from the microcomputer and a time delay switch. Additional logic provides a bleed valve override signal for closing the valve during the pumping phase and providing dumping of cuff pressure on the completion of blood pressure measurement.

An improved power switch circuit for turning on manually and for turning off either manually or automatically a battery operated electronic instrument. The circuit includes one manual momentary contact on/off switch, a bilateral switch or transmission gate, a microprocessor, and a capacitor that charges to a threshold level when the on/off switch is momentarily closed (on) and that discharges when either the on/off switch is momentarily closed again (off) or after a fixed amount of time has elapsed as determined by the microprocessor. The bilateral switch is switched on when the threshold potential is reached thereby preconditioning the on/off switch for turning the instrument off. The on/off switch can now be closed to discharge the capacitor or the microprocessor can discharge the capacitor thereby switching off the bilateral switch and preconditioning the on/off switch for again turning on the power to the electronic instrument.

Power switch

A laminated, sheet-like transducer is disclosed which produces an output signal in response to changing mechanical forces applied thereto. The transducer includes a top flexible plate with a matrix of uniformly spaced-apart convex members on one surface and a bottom flexible plate with a matrix of uniformly spaced-apart convex members on one surface. The convex members on the surface of one plate are aligned with the spaces between the convex members on the surface of the other plate. A synthetic resin polymer electret film is sandwiched between the convex members of each plate and becomes deformed when the convex members press against and horizontally stretch the electret film due to the changing mechanical forces applied to the transducer. Electrodes are connected to opposite surfaces of the electret film and form, at least on one surface, a uniformly spaced-apart electrically interconnected electrode configuration. The electrodes sense the electrical charges in the electret film and produce a signal proportional to the magnitude of the changing mechanical forces which induce the electrical charges.

A toy has a base member, a motion-detecting element mounted on the base member and detecting the presence of a motion of an object in the vicinity of the toy and the absence of a moving object in the vicinity of the toy, an action-performing element mounted on the base member for cooperating with the motion-detecting element, and electrical elements connecting the motion-detecting element and the action-performing element whereby the latter is operated in response to the detection by the motion-detecting element, wherein the motion-detecting element includes an objective arranged to transmit light to establish an image of an object in the vicinity of the toy, an image-distorting element located after the objective as considered in direction of light passage and arranged to distort the image, and a photosensing element arranged to sense the distorted image and produce a signal for operation of the action-performing element.

Toy including motion-detecting means for activating same

A motion detection system is disclosed which utilizes a lens or other imaging device to be responsive to motion in a particular field of view in a room, for example, and pass illumination to a photocell. The photocell or a screen in front thereof establishes image distortion so that there is a nonuniform electrical output from the photocell upon motion of objects in the given field of view. The nonuniform electrical output establishes pulses which are passed to a timer and continually resets the timer so long as there is motion detected. Upon discontinuance of any motion in the field of view, no further pulses are passed to reset the timer, and the timer times out to de-energize an electrical load. This may be an electrical lamp illuminating the field of view, or it may be an electric soldering iron or typewriter which is de-energized when the person has left the room.
