A one way ranging method estimates a distance between first and second wireless devices using a technique that involves exchanging dual tone RF signals between the devices and, at each of the first and second devices, maintaining 'baseband coherence' between baseband signals carried by the RF signals transmitted and received by each respective device.

Ranging measurement employing baseband coherence

A method for detecting a modification, due to an interferer, of a wireless channel between a transmitting device and a receiving device. First and second samples of channel frequency response (CFR) of the wireless channel are measured within a time interval less than or equal to a pre-established static time interval throughout which the wireless channel is expected to exhibit a static characteristic in an environment without any interferer. An interferer is detected to have modified the wireless channel when a similarity condition reflecting a degree of similarity between the first and second CFR samples is not satisfied.

Detection of spoofing or jamming attacks in wireless communication system

Techniques and systems for extending the capture range of frequency offset error detection are described. For instance, the present disclose describes efficient frequency estimation structures (e.g., zero crossing minimum/maximum (min/max) structures) that may extend carrier frequency offset error capture range by running a bank (e.g., a set) of parallel capture range structures trialing different frequency errors. In some aspects, a set of frequency offset estimation circuits and a set of correlation circuits (e.g., 1-bit correlators) may be used on parallel streams to perform correlation operations on each branch of a received bit stream to determine correlations with known preamble patterns (e.g., to accurately estimate large frequency offset errors).

Carrier frequency error estimation using a bank of estimators with limited acquisition range

An apparatus and method for carrier frequency estimation include a carrier frequency estimator having: a frequency input terminal disposed to receive a frequency-domain input signal comprising a plurality of symbols; a plurality of candidate pipelines, each comprising a frequency adder coupled to the frequency input terminal, a bit converter coupled to the frequency adder, a multi-bit buffer coupled to the bit converter; and a correlator coupled to the multi-bit buffer, respectively; and a candidate pipeline selector coupled to the correlators.

Carrier frequency error estimator with banked correlators

A measurement method performed at a receiving device involves sequentially receiving RF signals, each comprising a different set of at least first and second tones at differing frequencies. Complex gain responses (CGRs) for each of the first and second tones of each of the RF signals are measured. A phase offset is determined between: i) a phase of the CGR of the second tone of a first RF signal, and ii) a phase of the CGR of the first tone of a second RF signal. A coherent channel frequency (CCF) response of the second tone of the second RF signal is computed by adjusting a phase of the CGR of the second tone of the first RF signal by the phase offset. A processor executes a signal paths calculation algorithm using the CCF response of the second tone of the second RF signal to determine an angle or time of arrival of the first RF signal.

Time / angle of arrival measurement using narrowband signals

A polar transmitter and method thereof generate a filtered IQ waveform in IQ space representing an input bit stream. The filtered IQ waveform is modified to avoid a zero crossing region by intermittently adding thereto a zero crossing avoidance signal with a frequency spectrum comprising at least first and second tones defining first and second peaks on opposite sides of a center-frequency valley. A polar signal comprising a polar amplitude and phase is generated based on the modified IQ waveform. An RF carrier is modulated using the polar signal.

A receiver configured to receive a frequency-modulated transmission having a preamble and a corresponding method are provided, the receiver having a buffer coupled to an input terminal for receiving the transmission, a time-to-frequency transformer coupled to the buffer, an energy aggregator coupled to the transformer, a preamble detector coupled to the aggregator, and a symbol synchronizer coupled to the detector; the method including receiving a sequence of time-domain frequency-modulated samples, transforming the sequence of time-domain samples into a spectrum of frequency-domain data, and matching an actual energy distribution over a plurality of discrete frequencies in the frequency-domain data with an expected energy distribution of the preamble to determine frequency error.

Synchronization for low-energy long-range communications

Apparatus to reduce noise in a stereo FM broadcast received via an antenna, the apparatus comprising: a frequency translator configured to translate the received stereo FM broadcast to an intermediate carrier frequency, a demodulation unit configured to demodulate the translated FM signal so as to form left-plus-right and left-minus-right AM signals, a filter configured to form a filtered signal by filtering one of the AM signals, so as to suppress a sub-band of that signal containing unwanted tones, a summing unit for summing the filtered signal and the other of the left-plus-right and left-minus-right signals to produce a stereo audio signal.
