A latex binder for a pigmented paper coating, the latex including particles of an emulsion copolymer comprising (i) from about 15 to about 35 weight % mer units deriving from the polymerization of acrylonitrile; (ii) from about 25 to about 65 weight % mer units deriving from the polymerization of conjugated diene monomer; and (iii) from about 5 to about 55 weight % mer units deriving from the polymerization of alkenyl aromatic monomer, based upon the total weight of the mer units within the particle.

This invention relates to a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex for utilization in bonding carpet piles to carpet backing. By utilizing this improved latex, it is possible to attain improved wet-adhesion, a stronger tuft bind and improved delamination resistance. These improved properties are attained by including a rosin acid soap in the carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex. This invention more specifically discloses a carpet latex compound which is comprised of (a) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex, (b) a filler, (c) a thickener and (d) optionally, a curative; wherein said carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex is comprised of (i) water, (ii) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber, (iii) an emulsifier and (iv) a rosin acid soap. The subject invention further discloses a process for manufacturing carpet which comprises the steps of (1) coating one side of a backing with a carpet latex compound to produce a latex-coated backing, wherein the carpet latex compound is comprised of (a) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex, (b) a filler, (c) a thickener and (d) optionally, a curative, and wherein said carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex is comprised of (i) water, (ii) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber, (iii) an emulsifier and (iv) a rosin acid soap; (2) bringing a pile into contact with the coated side of the latex-coated backing and (3) allowing the carpet latex compound to dry while keeping the pile in contact with the coated side of the latex-coated backing to produce the carpet.

Carpet latex compound

There is a need for colorers which are utilized in automotive interiors which offer good color stability as well as a high level of Neat and ultraviolet light resistance. It is particularly critical for polymers which are utilized in making skin compounds for automotive instrument and door panels to have excellent color stability as well as excellent heat and ultraviolet light resistance. This invention discloses a rubbery polymer which can be blended with polyvinyl chloride to make leathery compositions having good color stability, heat resistance and ultraviolet light resistance, said rubbery polymer being comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) butyl acryylate, or optionally a mixture of butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate containing up to about 40 percent 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (b) at least one member selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate, (c) acrylonitrile, (d) styrene, (e) a conjugated diene monomer and (f) a crosslinking agent; wherein the repeat units which are derived from the conjugated diene monomer are epoxidized. Such leathery compositions offer an excellent combination of properties for utilization in making skin compounds for panels used in automotive applications.

Rubbery polymers with improved color stability

There is a need for polymers which are utilized in automotive interiors which offer good color stability as well as a high level of heat and ultraviolet light resistance. It is particularly critical for polymers which are utilized in making skin compounds for automotive instrument and door panels to have excellent color stability as well as excellent heat and ultraviolet light resistance. This invention discloses a rubbery polymer which can be blended with polyvinyl chloride to make leathery compositions having good color stability, heat resistance and ultraviolet light resistance, said rubbery polymer being comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) butyl acrylate, or optionally a mixture of butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate containing up to about 40 percent 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (b) at least one member selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate, (c) acrylonitrile, (d) styrene, (e) a conjugated diene monomer and (f) a crosslinking agent; wherein the repeat units which are derived from the conjugated diene monomer are epoxidized. Such leathery compositions offer an excellent combination of properties for utilization in making skin compounds for panels used in automotive applications.
