Rotary steering systems are disclosed. An example vehicle steering system includes an input gear fixed to an end of an input shaft, a first intermediate gear fixed to a first pinion, the first intermediate gear engaged with the input gear, a second intermediate gear fixed to a second pinion, the second pinion engaged with the first intermediate gear or a third intermediate gear, a motor fixed to a third pinion, the third pinion engaged with the second intermediate gear, the motor to rotate the first intermediate gear and the first pinion, a third gear fixed to a shaft, the third gear engaged with the first pinion, the third gear and the shaft to rotate as the first intermediate gear rotates, and a pitman arm coupled to the shaft, the pitman arm to couple to a drag link to turn wheels of a vehicle as the shaft rotates.

Rotary steering systems

Steering assembly mounts with curved interfaces are disclosed herein. An apparatus disclosed herein includes a first bushing including a first outer diameter, a first inner diameter, and a first curved surface disposed between the first outer diameter and the first inner diameter, the first curved surface to receive a corresponding second curved surface of the first structure, a second bushing including a second outer diameter, a second inner diameter, and a third curved surface disposed between the second outer diameter and the second inner diameter, the third curved surface to receive a corresponding fourth curved surface of the first structure, and a fastener extending through the first bushing and the second bushing, the fastener to extend through a portion of the second structure.

Steering mounts with curved interfaces

A recirculating-ball style gearbox for a vehicle steering system is provided. The gearbox has a rack with rack-teeth that are capable of providing variable ratio steering, where the rack-teeth are in mesh with the involute-teeth of a tapered sector gear. The involute-teeth of the sector gear have arrays of helical meshing lines extending across the meshing surfaces of the teeth, wherein the array of helical meshing lines have leads that decrease in length moving radially outward across the meshing surfaces.

A steering linkage assembly for a motor vehicle has a tie rod and a drag link connected to a steering knuckle in an over/under arrangement, with first and second ball joints for the drag link and the tie rod respectively on opposite sides of the steering knuckle and having a common axis that is located within an interior volume of a wheel supported by the steering knuckle. The coaxial, over/under configuration results in a ball joint assembly having a minimum axial dimension so that both ball joints can be located inside the inner rim of the wheel and as far outboard and as far forward as possible. The extreme outboard placement of the drag link ball joint maximizes the length of the drag link to reduce bump and roll steer sensitivity, and the forward placement maximizes the effective steering arm radius to reduce steering linkage loads while also improving packaging.
