Systems and methods for front-end linearization using information from a baseband circuit are disclosed. In one aspect, a baseband circuit provides information to a front-end module that uses the information to adjust operating parameter settings such as how an analog predistortion (APD) circuit or power management integrated circuit behaves to provide more linear operation of the front-end module across the frequencies of interest. In exemplary aspects, the front-end module may receive raw information from which the front-end module determines what changes should be made. In alternate exemplary aspects, the baseband circuit provides instructions or coefficients that are then used by the front-end module to make the changes. In either event, the front-end module may optimize operation to reduce power consumption and provide more linear operation so that the transceiver may better operate within the parameters of a given wireless protocol.

Linearized front-end operation using information from baseband circuit

Multimode radio frequency (RF) amplifier systems and techniques are disclosed. In one embodiment, a multimode radio frequency (RF) amplifier system has a first RF amplifier and a second RF amplifier. The first RF amplifier may support a first RF communication standard. The second RF amplifier may support a second RF communication standard. The first RF amplifier includes an auxiliary circuit. The auxiliary circuit may provide a service or a utility to a second RF amplifier. For example, the auxiliary circuit may generate a supply voltage to power the second RF amplifier.

Multimode RF amplifier system

A system and method are provided for maintaining a consistent operating condition of a power amplifier power amplifier across a range of operating temperatures. The power amplifier is provided with an input bias voltage (Vbias) that adjusts with temperature to compensate for the temperature dependent change of the power amplifier's base-emitter voltage drop Vbe. This maintains a consistent operating condition in the power amplifier, which reduces temperature-dependent changes in the amplifier's gain.

Polar modulation input signals to a polar modulated power amplifier include a phase modulated (PM) input signal, which feeds a power amplifier input, and an amplitude modulated (AM) input signal, which provides an envelope supply voltage for the power amplifier. The present invention is a large signal polar modulated power amplifier that extends the effective amplitude range of AM input signals that can be handled by the power amplifier by amplitude modulating the PM input signal using the AM input signal. Amplitude modulating the PM input signal effectively lowers the amplitude of the PM input signal when the amplitude of the AM input signal is lowered, which maintains adequate headroom between the power amplifier's signal input and envelope supply voltage input in the presence of large amplitude AM input signals. As a result, the power amplifier can amplify larger amplitude AM input signals than traditional power amplifier designs.

Large signal polar modulated power amplifier

Power control circuitry that is configurable as either a Low Dropout (LDO) voltage regulator or a switching DC&#x2014;DC converter for controlling a variable supply voltage provided to a power amplifier of a mobile terminal is provided. The power control circuitry includes an output stage including first and second output transistors, an analog control system, and a digital control system. When in LDO voltage regulator mode, the analog control system provides an analog control signal to the first transistor based on an adjustable power control signal and a feedback signal indicative of the variable supply voltage, and the digital control system operates to disable the second output transistor. When in DC&#x2014;DC converter mode, an output stage of the analog control system is disabled, and the digital control system provides binary control signals to the first and second transistors based on the adjustable power control signal and the feedback signal.
