A drill pipecomprises an elongate pipe sectionhaving a substantially uniform pipe outer diameterand a substantially uniform pipe inner diameter. A pin tool jointis welded at one end to the pipe section, and a box tool jointis welded to the other end of the pipe section. Each of the pin and box tool joints includes a thread for mating engagement and preferably first and second shoulders. The drill pipe has a ratio, R, which takes into consideration the pipe inner diameter, P, the pipe outer diameter, P, the tool joint inner diameter, TJ, and the tool joint outer diameter, TJ. This ratio may be expressed as:According to the present invention, this ratio is greater than 8.0, and is preferably from 8.1 to 8.5, thereby providing a drill pipe with desired strength and fluid flow capabilities.

High efficiency drill pipe

An oilfield tubular member includes pin member and box member each having a tapered thread . The pin thread has a root , a crest , a pressure flank and stab flank . The box thread has root , a crest , a pressure flank and stab flank . The pin crest has a stab flank pin crest radius and a pressure flank pin crust radius which is at least twice the radius . The improved oilfield connection minimizes damage to the connection during misalignment of the pin member and box member.

Oilfield tubular connection

A tubular body made of a first metal and having a box end and a connection end, the box end having an internally threaded portion and an internal cylindrical thread-free portion axially outward of the threaded portion, the tool joint further including an anti-fretting section, preferably in the form of a sleeve of a second metal that is snugly received in a counterbore formed in the box end, the sleeve having an internal cylindrical surface having a diameter substantially the same as the internal diameter of the cylindrical thread-free portion of the box end, the second metal having a modulus of elasticity less than the modulus of elasticity of the first metal, the invention further including a drill pipe made by affixing first and second tool joints as described above to first and second opposed ends, respectively, of an elongate pipe body, the pipe body being affixed to the tool joints by a threaded shrink-grip connection, the first tool joint forming a box connection, the second tool joint forming a pin connection.

Tool joint and drill pipe made therefrom

A drill pipe,comprises an elongate pipe section,having a substantially uniform pipe outer diameter,and a substantially uniform pipe inner diameter,. An ultra high torque double shoulder tool joint (see FIG. 1) for maximizing the torsional strength of a threaded connection by correlating a transverse cross-sectional counter-bore area of the box (12) and pin (10). The pin 10 includes a base section 74 and a nose section 24. The nose section 24 defines a cross-sectional nose area 28. The pin external threads 22 include a taper no greater than 1/12. The box 12 includes a cross-sectional counterbore area 46 and a cross-sectional box area 52. The overall strength of the tool joint is dependent upon the torsional strength of the threaded connection, the cross-sectional nose area (28) and the cross-sectional counter-bore area (46).

Ultra high torque double shoulder tool joint

A tubular drill pipe having a pin connector at one end and a box connector at the other end has each connector adapted to mate with a connector similar to that at the opposite end of the pipe--but on another pipe, to form a tool joint. The connectors are of the type having two pair of axially abutting make-up faces: a primary annular shoulder formed at the inner end of the base of the pin connector, which mates with the end face of the box connector to form a first such pair; and an internal secondary shoulder at the inner extremity of the base of the box connector which abuts the end of an outermost nose section of the pin connector. The (a) length of the threaded section of the pin, (b) the transverse cross-sectional area of the pin nose, and the smaller of (c) the transverse cross-sectional area of the box counterbore section, and (d) the transverse cross-sectional area of the last engaged thread of the pin are correlated, so that the torsional strength of the joint is approximately equally dependent on each of (a), (b) and the smaller of (c) or (d).

Drill pipe with improved connectors

Portable shoulder dressing apparatus is disclosed for dressing shoulders on threaded ends of tubular connections. The shoulder dressing tool, either of the box type or pin type, uses primary and/or secondary cutters to remove material from seal and/or stop shoulders of the tubular connection either simultaneously or on a single shoulder. The shoulder dressing tool includes a mandrel that is threadably secured to the threaded end of the tubular connection. A piston and cutter bar are fixably secured together for holding primary and secondary cutter blades. The piston, cutter bar, and cutters are mounted for axial and rotational movement with respect to the mandrel. A compression chamber is activated, either hydraulically or pneumatically, to provide a biasing force to urge the cutters axially into contact with the shoulders to be dressed. An axially adjustable stop including a stop roller is used to set a travel length that determines the amount of material removed from the shoulders. The shoulder dressing tool may be operated either manually or automatically.

Shoulder dressing apparatus

A pipe body is provided having an upset portion and connecting to a tool joint to form a relatively rigid region. A stress relief groove is provided in this relatively rigid region of the tubular member to limit stress applied in the pipe body adjacent the upset portion by rotation of the pipe while the pipe is in an arcuate portion of a well bore. The stress relief groove is designed to increase flexibility of this relatively rigid region while providing that the anticipated stress to be applied in the relatively rigid section is less than the endurance limit in the locus of the stress relief groove.

A method of connecting a joint of drill pipe for rotary earth drilling having tool joint members on each end with threaded connections for connecting the joint with other joints of drill pipe is shown. Nickel plating is applied to a portion of the threaded connection of at least one of the tool joint members. The threaded connection is then doped with a zinc base thread compound and the joint of drill pipe is made up by threadedly connecting the nickel plated threaded connection of one tool joint member with the threaded connection of a mating tool joint member. The nickel plated tool joint member when used with zinc base thread compound provides a connection with desirable frictional properties at elevated temperatures such as are encountered in geothermal wells.
