A method and apparatus of applying a coating to an article having one or more recesses or through holes includes establishing in a bath of coating solution a substantially uniform velocity flow field over and generally parallel to the surface of the article so as to create a pressure differential between the liquid flowing over the surface and the liquid present in the hole or recess.

Apparatus and method for coating multilayer article

Cathode for collecting and donating charged particles. The cathode comprises current collector means for collecting charged particles injected into the cathode from an anode. Current conducting means are provided which are electrically interfaced to an ion transporting medium and to the current collector means. The current conductor means transfers charge from the current collector means to the ion transporting medium. The current conducting means comprises a plurality of core members and a charge donor material that donates charge to the ion transporting medium when the current collector means collects charged particles. A battery is also provided comprising the cathode and an anode means for discharging charged particles when the battery is loaded. Methods of manufacturing the cathode comprise coating a plurality of core members with a charge donating material and interfacing the coated core members to an ion transporting medium to provide a subassembly composite. The subassembly composite is interfaced with the current collector. In preferred embodiments, the cathode comprises a matrix of carbon fibers coated with an electrically conductive polymer which are integrally engaged with a polymeric ion transporting medium.

Cathode for a solid-state battery

Systems and methods that use a CW Doppler radar to monitor paint particle velocities as they are sprayed from a paint gun to optimize the application of sprayed paint onto the object, and provide a closed loop spray painting system and paint spraying method that controls the application of paint in real time using data generated by the radar. The Doppler radar and a signal analyzer are used to analyze the Doppler return signals and display data indicative of the velocity of the paint particles. The data may be used by an operator to manually adjust the paint spray system. In addition, the spectrum analyzer may be used to generate and couple control signals to the paint spray system to provide for closed loop feedback control of thereof. One method comprises the following steps. Spraying paint particles toward an object that is to be painted using a paint spray gun. Radiating Doppler radar signals at the paint particles that are moving toward the object. Receiving backscattered Doppler shifted radar returns from the moving paint particles. Processing the received backscattered Doppler shifted radar returns to produce data indicative of the velocity of the paint particles. Displaying the data indicative of the velocity of the paint particles. This method unobtrusively and remotely measures paint particle velocity and velocity distribution. By additionally generating control signals in response to the data, the paint spray system is controlled.

Spray paint monitoring and control using doppler radar techniques

An oxide superconductor having a high critical temperature is provided with a passivation coating comprising a first layer of a Group II oxide, such as magnesium oxide, and a second layer of a polymer, such as polyimide. The Group II oxide is formed under conditions to be substantially amorphous. After depositing the Group II, layer, the encapsulated superconductor is heated to an elevated temperature for a period of time in an oxidizing atmosphere. This restores the high critical temperature to its original value. The polymer is then coated on top of the Group II oxide and cured. The passivation coating is resistant to strong acids, strong bases, and water, is robust, hard, and resilient against scratching.

A GaAs circuit structure is described which interposes a Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) layer between the substrate and a conductive contact. The thickness of the layer is controlled to determine the operating characteristics of the device. The head group of the L-B molecule is chosen so that it passivates the surface states of the particular GaAs substrate being used. Certain preferred acids and amino head groups are disclosed. The L-B layer has been found to both increase the gate barrier height for an FET, and to passivate dangling bonds and surfaces defects in the GaAs substrate to enable inversion mode operation. Specific FET and diode devices are described.

An anode of reducing agent material particulates is introduced into an electrolytic solvent bath under compression. The carbon material is selected such that there is a minimum number of particle contacts. In such a selection, the contact surface area is important and is determined primarily by particle size. The compression of the anode is maintained greater than about 5 psi.

Method and apparatus for production of a metal from metallic oxide ore

A cell for the electrolytic deposition of metal at low temperatures and low electrical consumption in which an anode of a metal oxide and reducing agent immersed in an electrolytic molten halide salt bath comprises lithium chloride and sodium fluoride, the bath formulated to have high electrical conductivity and very low solubility for the metal oxide, as well as the recovered metal. The electrolytic molten halide salt bath is substantially absent of the metal to be recovered.

An anode of a mixture of reducing agent and metal oxide particulates is inserted into an electrolytic solvent bath under compression. In forming the particulate anode, the materials of construction are selected such that there is a minimum number of particle contacts. In such a selection, the contact surface area is important and is determined primarily by particle size. The compression of the anode is maintained to deform the particles during electrolysis.

The unitary electrode (10) comprises a porous sheet (12) of fiberglass the strands (14) of which contain a coating (16) of conductive tin oxide. The lower portion of the sheet contains a layer (18) of resin and the upper layer (20) contains lead dioxide forming a positive active electrode on an electrolyte-impervious layer. The strands (14) form a continuous conduction path through both layers (16, 18). Tin oxide is prevented from reduction by coating the surface of the plate facing the negative electrode with a conductive, impervious layer resistant to reduction such as a thin film (130) of lead or graphite filled resin adhered to the plate with a layer (31) of conductive adhesive. The plate (10) can be formed by casting a molten resin from kettle (60) onto a sheet of glass wool (56) overlying a sheet of lead foil and then applying positive active paste from hopper (64) into the upper layer (68). The plate can also be formed by passing an assembly of a sheet ( 80) of resin, a sheet (86) of sintered glass and a sheet (90) of lead between the nip (92) of heated rollers (93, 95) and then filling lead oxide into the pores (116) of the upper layer (118).
