In an electric motor, a conductive ring surrounds, and shields, each pole of stationary magnet. When a changing magnetic flux, produced by an armature, penetrates the ring, by Lenz's Law, the changing flux causes the ring to produce a counter-flux, which adds to the changing flux. Consequently, the total flux within the ring tends to remain constant. Maintaining this constant flux tends to reduce noise and vibration which the changing rotor flux otherwise causes.

The invention concerns an improved system for windshield wipers in vehicles. An induction motor is used, in which speed is accurately controlled by controlling frequency of power supplied to the motor. The induction motor may be of the consequent-pole type, which ordinarily does not produce sufficient torque. Addition of (a) auxiliary tooth slotting and (b) skew has raised the torque produced to acceptable levels. The invention includes a control system, which senses excess load on the motor, which occurs as the windshield dries, and reduces motor speed, subject to a minimum, in response.

In the reverse direction of motor rotation when the brake pressure is to be decreased, the mmfs of the auxiliary field windings oppose the mmf of the field magnets to produce a lower flux in the working air gap of the motor. This maximizes the speed characteristic of the motor to quickly reduce the brake pressure.

Differential performance characteristics are achieved in a motor-driven anti-lock braking system with a DC motor having a first brush which is employed for both forward and reverse motor rotation, a second brush which is employed in connection with the first brush when forward motor rotation is desired, and a third brush which is employed in connection with the first brush when reverse motor rotation is desired. The second and third brushes are displaced along the circumference of the motor commutator such that the first and second brushes encompass more turns of the rotor winding than the first and third brushes. As a result, more of the winding turns are active in the forward direction, and the motor torque is maximized for developing the required brake pressure. On the other hand, fewer of the winding turns are active in the reverse direction, and the motor speed is maximized to relatively quickly retract the armature within the valve bore to relieve the brake pressure.

This fan cage is formed from a plastics material and locking, locator and drive devices integral with the cage and extend from one edge thereof into a 'snap fit' connection with a motor driven rotor plate. A motor driven air moving apparatus adapted to high speed, constant duty operation has a DC permanent magnet motor with a stator and rotor, one having a wound core with an even number of identically sized, evenly spaced teeth and the other having an even number of identically sized, permanent magnet poles. One of the rotor and stator has a skew at an angle from the axial, the maximum achievable skew being less than one tooth pitch due to short axial core width. A groove is provided along the midline of each of the teeth of the core which is parallel to and shallower than the tooth separating slots and contains no winding. The groove is effective to divide the tooth magnetically in half and thus decrease the effective tooth pitch, whereby, simultaneously, the magnetically induced pulsating angular velocity of the rotor and resultant audible noise are reduced and the system efficiency of the motor and air moving apparatus combination at high speeds in constant duty operation is increased.

Single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) suspended in proximity to the rail of a locomotive are energized to increase the effective adhesion between the locomotive drive wheels and the rail in response to the detection of an operating condition in which the tractive effort of the locomotive traction motors is limited by less than optimal adhesion. The SLIMs are energized in relation to the reserve power capability of the power source and the limit of tractive effort improvement. One method further employs sand dispensing units activated if the suboptimal operating condition is not alleviated by activation of the SLIMs. Another method uses the sand dispensing units first, and only activates the SLIMs if the suboptimal operating condition is not alleviated by activation of the sand dispensing mechanism.

A resilient coupling between the rotor and output shaft of a brushless DC motor cooperates with a sensorless drive arrangement that obtains rotor position information from the voltage induced in the stator windings of the motor to reduce the effective inertia of the load and aid in starting of the motor.

The stator winding of a single-phase brushless DC motor with symmetrical rotor and stator air gap geometry is comprised of two serially connected relatively displaced sections energized with a source of direct current in accordance with the rotary position of the motor rotor. In the run mode, the full winding is energized; in the start mode, one of the sections is momentarily short-circuited if the initial winding energization fails to produce sufficient torque for starting.

The speed command for an open-loop brushless motor speed control system is overridden whenever the speed of the motor is less than a relatively low reference speed in order to quickly accelerate the motor to a running speed, despite a relatively low speed command.
