A reversible high energy capacity battery and method of making that battery. A cathode is formed by packing a mixture of from about 10 to 90 weight percent finely divided sulfur and from about 90 to 10 weight percent finely divided graphite about an electrically conductive electrode, preferably in a porous enclosure. This cathode and a reactive metal anode are placed in a case of suitable configuration which is non-reactive with other components. An electrolyte is prepared by mixing particles of an ion exchange resin system including a polyalkyl sulfide, a resin substrate and agent selected from the group consisting of H.sub.2 S, HS.sup.-, S.sub.2.sup.- and mixtures thereof in a polar solvent, such as water. Buffering agents, conditioners and complexing agents may be added to the electrolyte to improve battery life and performance.

A reversible high energy capacity battery and method of making that battery. A cathode is formed by packing a mixture of from about 10 to 90 weight percent finely divided sulfur and from about 90 to 10 weight percent finely divided graphite about an electrically conductive electrode, preferably in a porous enclosure. This cathode and a reactive metal anode are placed in a case of suitable configuration which is non-reactive with other components. An electrolyte is prepared by dissolving a metal solute and an ionic sulfide solute in a polar solvent, such as water. Buffering agents, conditioners and complexing agents may be added to the electrolyte to improve battery life and performance.

A solar energy collection panel assembly particularly adapted for use in a sun tracking system, The assembly is made up of several elongated components that have uniform cross sections and are preferably formed by extrusion. Interlocking base members have upwardly directed channels which hold tubes partially surrounded by thermal insulation material. Lens support assemblies having a generally isosceles triangular cross section with the triangle bases secured to the base members with the triangle sides oriented to direct light entering between apexes toward the tubes. Grooves at each pair or apexes receive the edges of an elongated, uniform cross section, compound, concentrating, cylindrical lens to attach the lens to the assembly. The lenses focus incident light on the tubes. Right triangular edge lens support members provide square edges to the assembly. A structural strong and rigid housing is preferably used to receive, support and strengthen the assembly.

Solar energy collection panel assembly

A solar boiler of improved energy efficiency that includes a solar panel for receiving solar energy and converting a liquid to steam and a highly accurate tracking system to maintain the panel substantially perpendicular to the sun. The panel includes a plurality of heat transfer liquid carrying tubes having a highly absorptive coating over areas receiving solar energy and high efficiency insulating material over remaining surface areas. An extruded compound concentrating cylindrical lens is positioned over each tube to concentrate received solar energy along a narrow linear energy receiving area. Each panel is mounted for rotation and tilting on a simple, sturdy base. Each panel is substantially closed but includes openings designed so that some air flow through the panel is permitted to prevent excessive heat within the panel while preventing entry of moisture. A tracking system capable of tracking with accuracy of substantially one-half degree or better is provided, utilizing an improved sensor and electronic circuit. A device utilizing the steam produced in the panel, such as a fluid driven engine powered electrical generator, may be positioned closely adjacent to the tubes to receive steam from the tubes.

High efficiency solar boiler

A steam engine of the rotary type including a housing with two annular chambers with each chamber having a piston assembly operable therein. The piston assemblies are carried by a common shaft and displaced 90 degrees apart. Each piston assembly includes two pistons. The pistons have their working end surfaces 180 degrees of rotation apart. The rotor shaft is hollow along a portion of its length. The hollow portion of the shaft delivers fluid under pressure from an external source through channels within the pistons to fluid troughs in the circumferential surfaces of the annular chambers. Additional channels in the annular chambers and housing provide fluid under pressure to actuate shuttle valves at specific rotation locations of the pistons in each chamber. Each chamber includes side wall vents for exhausting spent working fluid. A screen is positioned vertically between the adjacent vents to cause condensate to be directed to a collection sump by gravity.
