Methods for storing electrical energy discharged from a capacitive source, embodiments including developing a capacitive load in the source and closing a switch between the capacitive source and a voltage conversion block after an output voltage of the source both exceeds a threshold value and is detected to peak. The conversion block includes an inductor and the storage device connected in series and further may include a diode connected in parallel across the inductor and the storage device. Apparatus for storing electrical energy discharged from a capacitive source include embodiments having a capacitive source configured to produce an output voltage, a switch connected to the source, an inductor connected to the switch, a storage device connected to the inductor and a controller configured to close the switch after an output voltage of the source both exceeds a threshold value and is detected to peak.

Method for discharging capacitive loads

A vertically integrated electronically steered phased array that employs beamsteering using a programmable phase locked loop including a local oscillator. The local oscillator provides an oscillator signal that is converted to an RF signal that can be either up-converted for a transmit operation or down-converted for a receive operation. The relative off-set between independently generated local oscillator signals forms the basis of the off-set phase required for a phased array. The absolute measure of off-set phase is referenced to a globally distributed clock signal that aligns the zero degree phase shift of the oscillator.

Vertically integrated phased array

A guidance system for actively guiding a projectile, such as a bullet after it has been fired from a gun. The guidance system includes a radar unit that includes a plurality of receiver arrays. An optical scope is also mounted to the gun for optically sighting a target. An inertial measurement unit provided on the gun locks onto the target after it has been sighted by the scope, and provides a reference location at the center of the receiver arrays from which the bullet can be directed. The receiver arrays receive radar monopulse beacon signals from the bullet. The signals from the bullet are used to identify the position of the bullet and the roll of the bullet. The signals sent to the bullet provide flight correction information that is processed on the bullet, and used to control actuators that move steering devices on the bullet.

In accordance with one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, systems and methods disclosed herein provide for tracking of objects, aircraft, vehicles, and ground equipment in a tracking area, such as an airspace and/or an airport terminal area. One embodiment of a tracking system of the present disclosure comprises a signal monitoring component adapted to communicate with an object, such as an aircraft, when the object enters the tracking area. The signal monitoring component is adapted to transmit a monopulse beacon query signal to the object and receive a monopulse beacon response signal from the object. The tracking system further comprises an interface component adapted to process the received monopulse beacon response signal from the object, initialize a beacon transponder on the object, and assign a network address to the object.

System and method for tracking and identifying aircraft and ground equipment

The present subject matter discloses apparatus and methodologies for fabricating apparatus for harvesting power from environmentally induced vibrations. Piezoelectric devices and structures () are disclosed that employ constant force spring or flexure arrangements () in balanced opposition configurations () to enhance the power harvesting capabilities of the piezoelectric devices (). Power harvesting devices and systems in accordance with the subject technology may concurrently operate as sensors in motion sensitive applications thus providing self-powered monitoring capabilities.

Miniaturized piezoelectric based vibrational energy harvester

A method of manufacturing a piezoelectric beam is provided. The method includes inserting a piezoelectric body and a pair of roller pins into an injection molding form. Once the piezoelectric body and roller pins are enclosed within the injection mold form a liquefied substance is injected into the injection molding form. The liquefied substance solidifies to substantially permanently affix the roller pins to opposing distal ends of the body.

The present subject matter discloses devices, systems, and methodologies for harvesting power from environmentally induced vibrations. Piezoelectric devices () and structures are disclosed that may be employed in combination with electro-magnetic () or capacitive () elements to enhance the power harvesting capabilities of the piezoelectric devices (). The electromagnetic () and capacitive () elements may be used to assist in maintaining system mechanical resonance in order to maximize energy harvesting capabilities. Power harvesting devices and systems in accordance with the subject technology may concurrently operate as sensors in motion sensitive applications thus providing self-powered monitoring capabilities.

Energy harvester with adjustable resonant frequency

Methods for determining the resonant frequency for interrogation of a resonant device include steps for generating and transmitting RF interrogation pulses of various bandwidths to energize one or more SAW resonator elements. Initial RF interrogation pulses have a relatively wide bandwidth, such that the general location of a resonant device's resonant frequency can be expediently determined. Then, interrogation pulses having smaller bandwidth pulses can be transmitted near the determined general location of resonance to further narrow the location of resonance. In some emodiments, one or more initial interrogation pulses are transmitted in the center of or at an expected value within a range of operation of a resonant device. If the resonant frequency is not located at this initial location, then the range of operation is divided into halves (or other number of generally equal frequency range segments) and one or more interrogation pulses are transmitted at the center of each of the new search frequency range segments. This process of partitioning the search frequency range continues until the resonant frequency is located.

System and method for reducing search time and increasing search accuracy during interrogation of resonant devices

Disclosed is an apparatus and methodology for insuring measurement accuracy and performance reliability in the operation of devices employed to interrogate SAW devices. The present subject matter relates to an arrangement and methodology that provides an interrogator paired together with a separate receiver, which may comprise a second interrogator, functioning together to perform a self-testing operation. The interrogator may be a handheld device that is temporarily paired with a separate receiver or a like device or the interrogator may correspond to more or less permanently paired set of devices physically placed in an array.

RF calibration of saw interrogators

Disclosed is an apparatus and methodology for providing reduced coupling of radio frequency (RF) interrogated surface acoustic wave (SAW) based sensors to external bodies. Coupling, and therefore electrical loading of the sensor element, is reduced by providing an electrically conductive housing surrounding the SAW sensor element and by electrically coupling one terminal of the SAW sensor element to the electrically conductive housing. Electrical connection to an additional terminal of the SAW sensor element is provided by way of an electrically isolated connection through the electrically conductive housing.

Reducing coupling of RF interrogated SAWs to external bodies

An electronics assembly for integration with a tire structure or in another environment includes a condition-responsive device, an RF source, an antenna, and at least one controllable switching element. The condition-responsive device may comprise at least one acoustic wave resonator that is configured for monitoring such parameters as pressure and temperature within a tire or associated wheel assembly environment. The frequency and bandwidth of the RF source is preferably inclusive of the respective resonant frequency bands for each acoustic wave resonator. An antenna may also be connected to the condition-responsive device for facilitating the transmission of electric signals generated therein. In some embodiments, a switching element is coupled between the condition-responsive device and the RF source. Selective control of such switching element results in the modulation of data on the RF carrier, causing the condition-responsive device to transmit both sensed condition information as well as some other predefined digital data signal. Another controllable switching element may be provided in parallel with the condition-responsive device to selectively cloak the device for predetermined amounts of time, thus offering an anti-collision solution for multiple transmitting condition-responsive devices. The switching elements and corresponding control elements may respectively correspond to such devices as a field-effect transistor with a programmable microcontroller input or as an RFID transponder.

The present subject matter generally concerns the detection of tire related anomalies in a pneumatic tire using Doppler Micro-Power Impulse Radar technology together with radar signal analyzation methodologies. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for the detection of anomalies in pneumatic tires including tread separation, tread wear, uneven tread wear, tire balance and foreign body detection. The signal analysis used differentiates various of the detectable anomalies by analyzing the radar signals based on ranges of harmonics.

Doppler radar for detecting tire abnormalities

An enhanced piezoelectric wire structure includes an elongated portion of piezoelectric material, a metallic core, and an outer conductive sheath. The metallic core is substantially surrounded by the elongated portion of piezoelectric material and configured to function as a first electrode for the piezoelectric structure. The conductive outer sheath preferably covers selected areas of the elongated portion of piezoelectric material and functions as a second electrode for the structure. The piezoelectric material may correspond to barium titanate ceramic fibers, such that a lead-free structure is effected, however other piezoelectric materials may also be utilized. The disclosed structure can be poled with a reduced poling voltage and lower temperature level, and also requires a reduced voltage potential level required for mechanical actuation. A collection of such piezoelectric structures can be provided together in a modular patch assembly that may be formed in a variety of customized configurations for integration with various environments, and can function as a mechanical actuator device, a condition-responsive device (e.g., a sensor) and/or as a power generation device. When utilized as a power generation device, the subject piezoelectric assembly can power tire electronics components such as a revolution counter, a sensor, a rechargeable battery, a flashing light assembly, a microcontroller, a global positioning system (GPS), and a radio frequency (RF) device.

Piezoelectric ceramic fibers having metallic cores

An improved electronics assembly for integration with a tire structure includes an acoustic wave device such as a SAW sensor connected as a feedback element in an active amplifier and further coupled to an antenna element, thus forming an active transmitter configuration. Such a circuit configuration provides for the ability to actively transmit a combination of information from integrated tire electronics to a remote receiver location. The combination of information corresponds to the physical parameters sensed by the acoustic wave device as well as digital data superimposed on the RF signal emitted by the acoustic wave device by selectively switching the amplifier on and off. Optional integrated power sources configure the electronics assembly for operation as an actively transmitting device.
