Altitude compensation apparatus for use with a carburetion system for an internal combustion engine, the system having a passage through which air is drawn into the engine, a throttle valve positioned in the passage and movable between an open and a closed position to control the flow of air therethrough and a fuel circuit through which fuel is delivered to the passage for mixing with air to form an air-fuel mixture combusted in the engine. The position of the throttle valve, the flow rate of air through the passage and the vacuum level in the engine are each sensed and respective electrical signals representative thereof are supplied. The quantity of fuel supplied by the fuel circuit to the passage is metered thereby to maintain the air-fuel ratio of the mixture produced at a preselected value. In response to the aforesaid signals, the density of air being drawn into the engine is calculated and a control signal is generated to control the metering of fuel. The calculated air density is a function of the altitude at which the engine is operated and the control signal has characteristics which are a function of the calculated air density.

Altitude compensation apparatus

A diaphragm operated valve includes a valve body having inlet, outlet and bypass ports in it. A diaphragm assembly includes a flexible diaphragm and a valve stem. The valve stem has a main valve member attached to it which is movable with the diaphragm assembly. The diaphragm is flexibly responsive to negative pressure which regulates main valve member operation. The valve includes a fail safe feature which shuts the main valve passage upon loss of negative pressure. The diaphragm assembly and main valve function to regulate air output from the valve. A second pressure relief valve member is carried by, but operates independently of the valve stem. Means for limiting air output of the main valve during high air input conditions is carried on the pressure relief side of the valve and operates whenever the pressure relief valve is activated so as to aid in the closure of the main valve passage.

Fail safe bypass valve

A fuel flow control system which, in response to the true mass of air entering the throttle body of an engine, provides a regulated flow of fuel to the throttle body, thereby delivering the optimum mass fuel-air ratio to the engine and maintaining idealized engine performance. The air flow rate drawn through the throttle body by the engine is monitored along with air temperature and pressure, and an electronic control circuit computes the true mass of air and the ideal fuel flow rate which will produce the optimum mass fuel-air ratio. The circuit generates a command signal to a novel fuel flow regulating assembly which adjusts the fuel flow in response to the command signal. The regulating assembly includes a control valve positionable in response to the command signal and a pressure differential mechanism movably responsive to the control valve position. A fuel flow metering valve in turn is positioned by the pressure differential mechanism. A fuel flowmeter is included to measure the actual fuel flow rate delivered to the throttle body and a feedback signal generated from the flowmeter to the control circuit further aids in accurately positioning the metering valve and thereby insures correct fuel delivery to the engine.
