A system and method for generating an MPEG compliant video stream with satisfactory visual quality. The method employs re-encoding at a higher (or lower) bit rate, only the segments with unsatisfactory visual picture quality while retaining other parts of the original video stream and then merging the re-encoded segments with the remaining original portions. If the original video stream is coded at a reasonable bit rate, the number and length of those segments with unsatisfactory visual picture quality will be few and short. Re-encoding only those segments can save very significant amount of cost and only requires minimal additional storage space. Furthermore, the portions with satisfactory picture quality will be retained. The system and method is applicable to MPEG and non-MPEG compliant data streams.

System and method for reencoding segments of buffer constrained video streams

Apparatus, method and computer program product are provided for digitally processing an encrypted data stream scrambled, for example, according to content scrambling system (CSS) technology. This digital processing insures against communication of clear data within the computer system from a central processing unit (CPU) to any accessible structure, such as memory or a system bus. Descrambling of the (CSS) scrambled data stream occurs within a module executing on the CPU, which is followed by reencryption of the data prior to transfer from the CPU. By so processing the data, integrity of copyrighted material is maintained, while allowing for software descrambling of the CSS encrypted data stream. Various techniques for establishing the encryption/decryption algorithm pair employed are described. Decryption of the re-encrypted data can occur at a receiving software module and/or a receiving hardware device, such as a decoder.

Apparatus, method and computer program product for protecting copyright data within a computer system

A method and apparatus for delivering multimedia video data from a server (host processor) to a plurality of clients connected to a communications network. More specifically, with this invention, preprocessed video and multimedia data packets are striped across disks in units of fixed playback time, even if such units result in variable length stripes. To deliver multiple video or continuous media streams, the disks in the array are accessed simultaneously so that at any given instance, different disks are accessing the video or multimedia data for different streams. Access to the disks for reading the continuous media files is scheduled periodically, with the period equal to the back time of the stripes. Because each disk read command retrieves data for a fixed play back time, if the first read command for a continuous media stream request can be scheduled to complete on a disk within a playback time, all subsequent read commands are also guaranteed to not interfere with read commands of other streams. Data is delivered directly from the disk array to the communication network by a stream controller without being sent to the host system. Disk storage is utilized efficiently by allocating disk space in units of cylinders and storing the variable size stripes of video in packed format.
