A composition is provided for treating drinking water for disinfecting and/or removing iodide. The composition utilizes resin bound silver ions. For performing the disinfection or iodide removal with minimal release of silver ions into the water being treated, a chelating resin having iminodiacetate chelating groups is employed, and the resin is loaded with not over 0.5 mol of silver ions per mol of iminodiacetate.

Composition for treating water with resin bound ionic silver

A method is provided for removing iodide from aqueous solutions in which the iodide is converted to iodine. The porous granules of the polyvalent metal chelating resin containing zirconium peroxide bound to the chelating groups thereof is contacted with the aqueous iodide solution. The iodine is formed within the granules and retained therein, permitting the aqueous solution to be separated to create iodine. This iodine can be recovered by organic solvent elution. The oxidative capacity of the resin granules has been reduced, it can be regenerated after removal of the obtained iodine by contacting the resin granules with aqueous hydrogen peroxide.

A method is provided for treating drinking water for disinfecting and/or removing iodide. The method utilizes resin bound silver ions. An oxidizing resin for iodide conversion and retention is prepared from a metal chelating resin providing functional groups binding polyvalent metal ions. The oxidizing resin is formed by applying an alcohol solution of zirconium peroxide to the chelating resin granules. The resulting oxidizing resin will convert iodide to iodine in aqueous solution, and will retain the converted iodine within the resin granules. When the oxidative capacity has been reduced by treating large amounts of iodide, it can be easily regenerated by contacting the zirconium-containing resin with hydrogen peroxide.

A method is provided for strong base anion exchange resins containing high concentrations of pentaiodide (I.sub.5.sup.-). The resins are prepared from highly concentrated solutions of I.sub.5.sup.- and I.sub.3.sup.- ions. The exchanged ions, such as chloried (Cl.sup.-), are washed out of the resin after completion of the exchange reaction with the polyiodide ion mixture. The resulting product is a stable resin of predetermined I.sub.5.sup.- content, which is highly effective as a disinfectant for water, acting against water-borne bacteria, virus, and Giardia.

3-Methyl-2-benzothiazolinone acetone azine and 2-phenylphenol in 1:4 molar solid mixture reacts specifically with ozone at concentrations of environmental interest to produce a red-violet color. The response is proportional, but not rectilinearly, to ozone concentration at constant exposure time and to time of exposure at constant ozone concentration. The reagent is intended for use with visual comparison standards in passive monitoring devices. No interference was observed from atmospheric oxygen, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, or bromine or iodine vapor. Chlorine produced a light yellow color.

A sensitive colorimetric detector for formaldehyde vapor is prepared by applying a ketone solution of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AHMT) to a support coated with a stable metal bicarbonate to form a compound from which the ketone can be displaced by formaldehyde to yield a chromogen developing a purple color proportional to the amount of formaldehyde. The detector is sensitive to gaseous formaldehyde in air at concentrations below 2 ppm.

Demand-type disinfectants are prepared from strong base anion exchange resin beads and elemental iodine. The resin is in the iodide form, and the iodine is applied with a water carrier which is recycled in contact with the resin and the stoichiometric amount of iodine to form the desired polyiodide (viz. I.sub.3.sup.-, I.sub.5.sup.-, or mixtures thereof). A homogeneous product of pre-determined polyiodide content is obtained.

A joint tape for use in building construction utilizing dry wall panels which includes a tape body of water absorbent paper, sized and shaped for smooth joints between dry wall building panels, and a layer of water-activable polyvinyl acetate-based adhesive on one side of the tape for wetting and then adhering the tape to the surface of adjoining dry wall sheets covering the joint therebetween.
