A restraining device for an occupant () seated in a vehicle seat including a carrier () extending over the lap of the seated occupant () when the restraining device is in use, an airbag () having an airbag main body () enclosing a main gas space and extending from a lower end () to an upper end () being located above the lower end () when the airbag main body () is in its deployed state, and an inflating device for filling the main gas space. The airbag main body () is connected to the carrier () via a connection section at the lower end () of the airbag main body () and has an impact wall (). In order to be independent of a support from another part of the vehicle the airbag main body () tapers from its lower end () to its upper end ().

Restraining device and vehicle seat

An airbag device comprising an airbag made of a woven fabric which is fastened to a vehicle structure, in particular above a vehicle occupant, and which can be filled with gas by means of a gas generator and in the filled state extends in front of the vehicle occupant is characterized in that a cutout is provided in the head impact region of the airbag fabric which the head of the vehicle occupant can penetrate, and this cutout is closed by a cover that is decoupled from tensile stress in the airbag fabric.

Airbag device

An air-bag () is provided with a vent aperture (). A membrane () extends across the vent aperture, the membrane defining a smaller aperture () than the vent aperture (). The periphery of the aperture is defined by a thickened part of the membrane. The membrane is formed of an elastic material such as a silicone rubber material. When a very high pressure exists in the air-bag the vent becomes deformed, thus increasing the size of the aperture defined by the membrane, permitting a relatively large flow of air from the air-bag to reduce the pressure within the air-bag.

The invention relates to an airbag arrangement in a motor vehicle comprising an airbag and a gas generator, which fills the airbag with gas after being activated, the airbag being arranged between two neighboring seating positions for vehicle occupants. The airbag is arranged in an openable lid of a center console or in an openable armrest.

Airbag system

An air-bag is formed using two substantially identical, but inverted, fabric elements. Each element defines a generally rectangular region having, at one narrow end thereof, a generally triangular extension, one side of which is co-extensive with one side of the rectangular region. The other side of the rectangular region has a triangular or thumb-like projection. The two elements are substantially superimposed with the rectangular regions thereof aligned. If the ends of the rectangular regions carrying the triangular extensions are separated, the projections or thumbs may be folded to form side-walls, and the triangular projections may be folded inwardly to form an end region. A single peripheral seam may seal the two elements together to form an air-bag.
