A composite test coupon includes a plurality of plies. The plurality of plies include first ply layers and second ply layers. The first ply layers have first fibers and a substantially uniform matrix material associated with the first fibers. The second ply layers have second fibers and a pre-stressed matrix material associated with the second fibers. The first fibers are oriented in a first direction, and the second fibers are oriented in a second direction that is different from the first direction. The pre-stressed matrix material includes stress induced cracks between the second fibers of each of the second ply layers.

One example of the present disclosure relates to a coupon. The coupon includes a first surface with a first circular channel and a second surface opposite and parallel to the first surface. The second surface is spaced a distance Dfrom the first surface and includes a second circular channel concentric with the first circular channel. The coupon also includes a toroidal portion between the first circular channel and the second circular channel. The toroidal portion includes a rectangular sectional portion.

Strength testing of a flatwise material coupon

A method and apparatus for forming a composite filler is presented. The method comprises cutting a number of layers from a composite material. The method also aligns the number of layers to form a composite filler having a cross-sectional shape. Each of the number of layers has fibers in plane with the cross-sectional shape.

Composite filler

A particular composite test specimen includes a first tab, a second tab, and a gage section between the first tab and the second tab. The first tab, the second tab, and the gage section are machined from a composite test blank. The composite test blank includes a plurality of plies arranged with first ply layers having fibers oriented in a first direction and second ply layers having fibers oriented in a second direction, where the first direction is different than the second direction.

An alignment apparatus for aligning a test panel with a testing machine may include a laser measuring system and an adjustment mechanism. The laser measuring system may include at least one laser measuring device coupled to a test fixture and/or a testing machine. The laser measuring system may generate laser measurement data representative of an orientation of a test panel relative to a platen and/or a loading axis of the testing machine. The adjustment mechanism may adjust, based on the laser measurement data, a location and/or orientation of the test panel relative to the platen and/or the loading axis in a manner such that the test panel is moved into substantially alignment with the platen and/or the loading axis.

System and method for testing compression panels

A testing apparatus for characterizing a tension strength of a fillet bond of a test specimen may include a lower fixture and an upper fixture. The test specimen may include a skin component bonded to a stiffener component. The lower fixture may maintain the stiffener component in a fixed position. The upper fixture may engage the skin component at a pair of discrete engagement locations on opposite sides of the fillet bond. The upper fixture may be mechanically coupled to a gimbal joint and may substantially isolate the filet bond from asymmetric bending during application of a tension test load to the fillet bond.

An illustrative embodiment of the washer includes a washer body having a composite layer and a metal layer bonded to the composite layer and a fastener opening extending through the washer body.
